Is it worth it?

Look, I know it's not ideal, but if your internet connection is mission-critical, you CANNOT rely on just one provider. Sentech is fine for home use, but if it's really really important, you better make sure you have another plan, just in case.
This I agree with and mentioned it in another post also.
If you run a business you need a backup plan.
My wife runs a business from home and she needs 24/7 internet and has ADSL512 and I have MyWireless256.
The number of times one of them has gone down is unbelievable.
All you need is ADSL192 and MyWi128 and you are home and dry.
ADSL has its problems, many of them, and you only notice them when you have an alternate.
There are many sites that show "This page cannot be displayed" on ADSL, yet if I switch over to MyWi they come in fast and furious.
I have also had this happen the other way around but most the time its ADSL that fails me with this problem.
MyWi sucks when using FTP clients for some reason and here I use ADSL quite extensively.
Even on my own Website (LA) when I use CuteFtp with MyWi, it logs on but refuses point blank to list a folder if it has more than around 20 files in it.
I switch to ADSL and it rockets in no problem.

But on the whole, I'd say they both have about equal problems and never again will I only rely on one connection.

So it seems the general consensus is that My Wireless seems better. As far as I'm concerned, ADSL can only get worse, because of Telkom flexing its muscle, and things can only get better for MyWireless, new concept in SA, growing client base. As far as I care, until the SNO gets ADSL up and running (I doubt this'll be before 2010), things are going to look glum!!!!

Allow me to take issue with some of your conclusions...

"general consensus is that My Wireless seems better." That doesn't seem apparent to me - it was mentioned that both have their strengths.

"ADSL can only get worse," Telkom flexing its muscle could go either way, but more competition may make them sit up and pay attention.

"growing client base" Which may mean more contention, which equals worse service.

Anyway, I'm not disagreeing with your conclusions, just saying that the logical leaps to get there were a bit dodgy.

No b*tchin

I must say this forum is starting to become a place where people moan all the time instead of sharing useful information and help fellow SA netizens.

A couple of weeks ago I signed up for MyWireless and despite having issues with their sign-up process I am completely happy. The download speeds I have experienced are good and very consistent. Even the helpdesk people I have dealt with have been mostly quite helpful.

I think people should bear in mind that in order to experience the standard of service Sentech says they offer you have to at least make sure that the signal you receive in your home is close to perfect. I think you are taking chance if you sign up for this knowing that you don’t have the greatest reception. I would even go as far as saying its pretty dumb to go ahead and sign up without being sure you'll get great reception from a tower nearby. And then coming on a forum totally dissing the service and thus scaring other potential users away. This does to help the broadband ISP industry in SA and thus won't help ordinary South Africans to achieve permanent connectivity.

With all due respect - Let's talk again after you have been on Sucktech for about a year. Average signal strength I had - 4 lights, 21%. Average bandwidth on a 256K package - 12kb. Average up time a week: 75%. Physically impossible to browse more than one person at the same time without Squid. Physically impossible to log onto MSN or play WoW.

@smokalot : The difference between you and most of the "complainers" is that they've been on MYWi for a little bit longer than "a couple of weeks". I don't think you're qualified to lecture us on the Sentech service

:) Luke7777 - I think you missed the point of my posting. Yes I have only been on for a few weeks - during which some users reported issues on here that I didn't even experience.

Fact is most people will only post on here to moan about issues whereas they will keep quiet when everything is going well.

And in response to the person who started this thread I say, check the signal in your area - make sure it is 100s. If so it is a WAY better option than say ADSL and performs just as well (when ADSL performs well).

Unlucky, dude.
Me:
Sentech for about 15 months.
Average signal strength: 2 lights (Paulshof tower).
Average bandwidth on my 256k package: 25k/sec
Average uptime: 20 days at a time.
Can browse 4 people (4 seperate machines too) with no noticeable degradation. No proxies, no cache.
MSN perfect. Skype Out: 80%.
Online real-time strat games: 100%.
BitTorrent: 25 - 30 k/sec.
FTP/HTTP with a download manager: 25 - 30 k/sec.

Me lucky? Maybe. Me happy? Yes.
(price could be lower though in my opinion).

Nope, I didn't miss the point.
Analogy :
Someone on honeymoon shouldn't diss other people, married with kids, when they complain about certain aspects of marriage.

The people who are always dissing?

Don't take it too much to heart man...
