Hi there people of myADSL... I'd just like to find out if it would be worth it to get a 192K ADSL connection and a 30gig account with all you can eat? What kind of download speeds do you get with the 192 connection? Keep in mind the phone exhange is right by my front gate(literally)Would I be able to actually fill that 30gigs in a month?

Thanks

Sure its worth it.

And yes, you will be able to eat all you can. (up to 30gigs)

But if you can't, PM me, I will help you ;)

Also, from what I have read on this forum, you won't go wrong with AYCE but, after the court case (March 22nd, if I am not mistaken) anything can happen, they might not be able to offer those prices anymore, the reason why I am telling you this is because you will not be able to get ADSL in the next 4 - 6 weeks ... :( ... at least.

Hmm,thanks... But tell me though whats this story of a court case and why won't i be able to get ADSL for the next 4-6 weeks? Sorrry I kind of fell out of this whole saga after going on holiday in December(spent a month without internet access *shudder*)

there is a long waiting list (depending on where u are) for getting ADSL installed... It can take upto 4-6 weeks... The court case.... Basically DOTCO (ISP) is saying they had a contract with TELKOM that let them sell 30 gig accounts for Rxxx and they do not want to pay or use the per gig method of charging. The court case is basically to decide whether or not DOTCO can continue to use the old priceing model.

Oh ok... I see, thanks alot... Holding thumbs that DOTCO wins so I can get a 30gig account instead of a 10gig... Otherwise, what kind of download speeds do you get on the 192K connection?

Theoritically 192 KBits per second = 24 KiloBytes per second.

Effective between 15 and 20 KBytes per Second.

Well u theoretically get 192/8 = 24 Kb/s but in real life u only get perhaps 85% of the max... but some people have got lucky and get more speed than they pay for... I got 384 line which means i should get at 100% theoretical speed of 48 Kb/s but i get around 54Kb/s most of the time...

Yes, if you leave your 192 line running 24/7 and download everything in sight, and your line works 100% - you should be able to download around 61 GIG/month (if my calculations is not failing me again :) .

Cool beans... Thanks alot people... Tell me though does the distance between your house and the phone exhange have an impact on your speeds? I read that somewhere. Just wondering since like I said, The phone exchange is right by my front gate. Every morning when I leave i have Telkom staring me in the face...

It has a big imact... that's the biggest problem with DSL, the line intenuates over distance, so as you get further you get slower. Alot of 192k users are getting in excess of 20Kbps, you should get between 20k - 35k per second.

Realistically speaking - no it wont make much of a difference with a 192 line.

One day, if we're ever given the chance of say a 20mb/s line, then you'll be scoring. Having a close exchange is essential in cases like that. :)

Hmph, yeah there is no benefit if your're going for 192k... you might see a benefit with 1MBit, maybe a little with 512k... don't know why I never thought of that earlier.

You forgot about the upload part ...

(192 kbps download + 64 kbps upload) x 1 month
= (192 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 / 8 + 64 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 30 / 8) bytes
= 62208000 + 20736000 bytes
= 82944000 bytes
= 82944000 / 1024 kilobytes
= 81000 / 1024 megabytes
EDIT: = 79.1 GB

I am on a 192K ADSL connection and I am getting download speeds between 30 - 35 KiloBytes per second. Was thinking of upgrading to 384k account or should I rather keep things as it is?

A whole 79.1 MB per month. Wohoo! ;P

(for the confused, should read GB)

lmao @ for the confused ... :p

I wonder if Telkom used the same method when calculating how much usage we would need ... :p

When they "also" arrived at 79.1 MB they actually thought that they were being generous by giving us 3GIGs :p
