Not sure if this is worth a go still (in mid 2007)... I never thought of going that far in gaming (buying consoles) cause i'm quite cool with PC gaming. My friend visited with his PS2 this weekend and brought FIFA 06 pro & Cricket 07 boy was fun playing... Now he's gone and i miss playing even thinking of buying one. Haven't got money for XBOX or PS3... Is it worth buying one?

PS2's can be had for pretty much peanuts these days, (I recently saw a Makro or Game Specials with a console and 4 AAA platinum titles for around R2k) and can still be fun, but be careful, because once you get into console gaming you're going to start wanting more, and the focus is shifting towards the newer boxes now, and all the new games and reviews are focus on PS3 and 360.

I'm not saying don't get one, I'm saying be careful, you may buy one and in 2 months when some of the big new titles come out, you might regret not waiting. I did that with the PSOne. But having said that I went back to PC gaming for the duration of the PS2 and am now back on console a happy Xboxer . . .

It may be worthwhile waiting a month or two, the 360 is due for a price cut and there is tons of pressure on Sony for one too. In their current incarnations, there is a bit of value in getting the PS2 (lots of good games), but if the 360 core hits R2k, I would undoubtedly say go with the next gen machine.

There aren't that many new games coming out for the PS2, but there are still some. If you are willing to play the many excellent games that are already available and the graphics are not a problem, then it can be a worthwhile purchase. I'm still buying PS2 games and I have several on my shelf I haven't played yet. Hopefully when I'm done the prices of the current generation will have come down and some other issues important to me will have been resolved.

Thinking of sticking to PC games up until i can afford PS3... Besides, i noticed i can get almost all the PS2 games on PC and my PC can still handle most of them at least for the next 12 months..

Thanx guys

I think getting a PS2 is suppose to be worthwhile, but problem is the retail price haven't dropped! The PS2 STILL goes for +-R1500 [which is what it cost long before the PS3 launched] . I believe once the PS3 takes off [if it does] the PS2 should at least drop to R1000 , ESPECIALLY if the PS3 price drops.

However, the PS2 games are dirt cheap right now. I've had my PS2 for a few years, and in the last year i've more than doubled my collection [legally ;)]. I mean NFS:Carbon is already on sale for like R250! PS2 games usually went for like R400+ , now i find most of them for R200 and less ....and THAT is why i would consider a PS2 right now.

So i'd say, maybe look for a 2nd hand PS2 [especially if are considering a PS3 maybe in 1 year or 2] for cheap and start building up a collection [you can replay them on your PS3 too].

ESPECIALLY if you are coming from PC gaming [never had a console before], sometimes it's a urge and then you realise you didn't really need a R7k console with games going for R500+ EACH, when a R1k console with R200 games would've "scratched the itch" sufficiently until the PS3 pricing makes more sense.

There aren't that many new games coming out for the PS2

I disagree, there are still more games coming out on PS2 than PS3 ! [God of War II to name a recent one]

And you might also notice even games like FIFA 08 is released on PS2 -and- PS3 .

Wait for the Xbox price cuts and you could pick up a core for R2000. Don't let the price difference and brand imaging fool you, 360 and PS3 are identical apart from bluray, and in many instances the 360 is superior (graphics for eg.).

I'm not looking to start yet another 360 vs PS3 flamewar, just letting you know which makes more sense at the moment. You could always get a bluray player if the technology takes off, but if it doesn't then you're down R7000 and kicking yourself because you could have saved R5000.

Personally I wouldn't go for a PS2. I hate to throw a spanner in the works but my girlfriends brother busted his old one and they bought him a new slimline version of it. I just shook my head in amazement. Yes the games are pretty good but I have always thought PS2 graphics to be dull and it has never appealed to me. (He is 19 but has mental probs :( and ends up busting things all the time)

If you want fun then buy a SEGA 16bit and get a hold of Mortal Kombat or something lol.

I really think the money you want to spend right now will be put to better use adding up to your next choice, an X-BOX or PS3 (i have never even seen these consoles btw :() and one day when it's time for you to buy those you are going to wish that 2K was around which you blew on a soon redundant console.

I wouldn't waste your money...

The PS3 is getting a price drop next week which means in all likely hood the Xbox will also get a price drop brining the core under R2k...

The 360 is a far superior machine in every aspect to the PS2 which is just old technology now....

Rather wait two weeks and see what happens with the prices.

I'd go for it dude. There's still a demand for ps2 games and they're still making versions of games coming out on other consoles that're playable on the ps2. The ps3 doesn't seem at all worth it yet, and if you don't have the cash for the xbox 360 (which ain't problem-free yet - http://mybroadband.co.za/news/General/Gaming/537.html) and are into FIFA 06 pro & Cricket 07 (and don't forget singstar :P) more than fantasy, you can still have tons of fun with a ps2. And there're a number of places where you can get a modded one with free games for way under 2k...

And if you do happen to buy a newer console later, you can hook up a DDR mat to the ps2 and give it to your mom as an exercise machine :)

..... and lets not forget risky aswell. Heard from some people that chipping their machines completely messed it up.
Only if you go to someone unreliable. There are more than enough reliable places. And chipping is completely legal. It was the only way to play US versions of the games, which were much cheaper. Still are in many cases - I can get Tomb Raider Anniversary for R250 versus R450+ here.

Sounds like my sticking to PC is not encouraged:(!
Depends what you're after. There are also many good PC games that will work fine on an older machine, which the PS2 effectively is as well. The graphics on the PS2 are definitely not dull, but they are not very high resolution and there is no antialiasing. Quite a few good games on the PS2 also have PC versions and you can connect an XBox 360 controller to play games that work best with a gamepad.

What you should do is make a list of games you want to play, then go with the platform on which you can play those games. Also check your local video store to see what PS2 games they have to rent. You can save money by just renting and playing, rather than buying.

Had my Xbox 360 since Nov 2005 and no problems yet

I bought my Xbox 360 shortly after it launched in Europe and have been using it ever since on a daily basis to play DVD's, stream videos and play games. My two daughters (4 and 6) use it all by themself daily to play their own children games. So far no scatched disks or "rings of death" for me yet.

Maybe I was just lucky, but I did not experience it as an unreliable machine at all. I've handled the controls of the PS3 and it feels flimsy compared to the sturdy solid ones of my Xbox 360.

Just my two cents in defence of my Xbox 360.... I love mine and would not trade it for anything else.

I support the 360 but would just like to add the PS2 got stability. With the Xbox360 you just have to hold your breath everytime you turn it on and hope it works :D :p

Umm I think that is quite an overstatement really.. My 360 hasn't given me any problems at all over the last 10 months... and even if it did it has a 3 year day on day replacement policy.

I'll take the risk. I think buying something that you know is being fazed out is a bit strange.

I've said it a dozen times but I'm always happy to reiterate. I couldn't be happier I bought a 360, even with the issues, the 3 year warranty just makes me even happier :)

Although, if I was looking to buy one now I'd ponder waiting for the falcon, it's around the corner and will probably bring in a price cut. But if it's out after Halo, I wouldn't hesitate and just by the current one now.
