Is MTN LTE Blocking Ports?

Gday,

I recently got a Hauwei B593 LTE modem/route with an MTN 10G + 8G LTE data package.

The speeds and latency are awesome, however I'm unable to set my router in NAT 2, it's always in NAT 3.

NAT 3 is a problem for my PS4 and online gaming (Which is why I bought this setup *Telkom ADSL fail). Also MTN is advertising this product as "great for online gaming too."

Now, I've tried putting my PS4 in the DMZ and also tried correct Port forwarding but still NAT 3, I've even tried the same setup with my PC and my Open Port checker still says the ports are closed. On the router side I have uPnP enabled and the firewall at it's lowest setting, all to no avail.

My only conclusion is that MTN is blocking the ports or has the LTE running on some additional network possibly double NATing.

Can MTN do something confirm/correct this, could this be an issue on my side?

As far as I know MTN blocks all incoming ports for 2G, 3G and LTE connections. If you want incoming connections to work you need to get ADSL or use a mobile provider that does not block incoming connections such as Telkom.

Hi there, kindly note certain ports are blocked by MTN due to security reasons on our LTE network.

However you can get a Open NAT on your PS or XBOX using a 3G network whereby you would need to load a service called "MTNVPN" which provides you with a unrestricted APN that opens all ports.

The MTNVPN only works on 3G & 2G networks and not on LTE as yet.

So essentially MTN LTE is then NOT "Great for online gaming". You guys should really remove that line from your advertising or at least mention somewhere that you are blocking everything needed to play online at acceptable levels. I feel really cheated now.

When will this MTN VPN be available on LTE?

Y'ello ASA. This is surely grounds for contract cancellation? Move over to TM where LTE works as advertised, even for gaming.

Telkom? ugh, I just ejected from Telkom due to the fact they can't repair their own ADSL lines, you must just "Deal with it and still pay" as they no longer upgrade copper, then when I tried to move to Telkom LTE I'm told I must live in a valley or donga as they don't cover my area, yet I get awesome coverage from MTN. :erm:

I swear the comms world is conspiring against me.

You do know that they are clueless regarding true coverage? You can be completely outside of the official signal coverage and get *perfect* coverage. How about this "almost" guarantee: if you get MTN LTE, you will get the equivalent TM LTE since they install their equipment on MTN towers.

Telkom outright refused to let me just try an LTE bundle because I was outside the coverage area. They would of course still sell me the package as long as I ceded my rights on the 7 day money back guarantee.

i.e. sign up a 2 year contract on the hopes I that I may get coverage? I felt it was scaly of them to force me out of my consumer protection just because their coverage maps are incomplete. Way too dodge for my liking.

They also advertised "Guaranteed LTE Coverage", which to me meant I would definitely be covered??? Nope it actually means and I'm quoting here, "If you have LTE coverage you will be covered".... I could understand it if they said "Guaranteed Signal if in LTE covered areas" but at that point I was gatvol of trying to explain english and redundancy to the sales rep.

Overall my telkom experience was so unpleasant I bailed.

Um, no, not all towers, especially since this MTR situation.

MTNVPN is for employees only as far as I know? il get clarification on the matter. I don't have open NAT type on my consumer sim and I still game like a demon, fair enough, I don't play call of duty.

In fairness this is the MTN section and you're now getting bad service from TM which I can empathise with. They are *clueless*.

They gave me the same runaround and even demanded I get off their network. Besides the demos they do at big events, I'm getting the highest consumer speeds I know of.

They are mad and are chasing paying customers away. I can run the TM LTE network for Gauteng and bring them big profits. They're shooting themselves in the foot. Very soon other networks will catch up and then they'll have lost their competitive edge.

What is your location? I will signal test for you with my own B593.

Unfortunately this wouldn't be for the gain of MTN though. The port blocking issue won't go away. I'm referring to signal testing with a TM B593. Sorry bud. :(

Perhaps MTN should come up with a quick solution before everyone turns to TM for gaming.
