Is MWeb shaping based on usage?

I've been wondering about this shaping issue. Many of us are being shaped to death on non-http protocols, but there are still MWeb subscribers out there who are getting 250kB/s or more on torrents or newsgroups. Is it possible that this shaping is usage based? In other words is there a correlation between gigabytes downloaded and how much you're shaped?

According to MWeb, I've done 151GB so far this month and my news downloads peak at 6kB/s. I'd appreciate it if other subscribers could state their amount downloaded for the month and their torrent or newsgroup download speed.

Thanks

I have my sneaky suspicions that they are, and alluded to this in a thread I started showing how my overall daily download quantity has on average been on a downward slide as the month has progressed. I have not been too noisy about this because when these uncapped services were offered a lot of Afrihost bashing took place as a result of their fully transparent shaping levels. I expressed my concerns then that MWeb had left it open for themselves to impose similar rules once they had nabbed users.... they are not transparent at all but in their T&Cs give themselves the option to change their conditions as it suits them. Doing so attracted a lot of contempt from the MWeb fans on this site...

No they are obviously not on the same package as you. They should not be allowed outside of their own terms and conditions....

As far as I am aware everyone on here discussing MWeb uncapped is on the same package (albeit different speeds). As stated the T&Cs are vague at best and therefore open to interpretation to suit MWEb on a whim.

I am not a lawyer by any recognized means of the SA government :) but I am sure they would need to inform the customer of any unilateral changes on their side. I am on 384k and running http and p2p and getting my "allotted" 60 gigs so far and likely to get it again this month, and the next. You only gonna max out if you running http downloads.

Then again I am would consider corporate terrorism against telscum, if I could only get the info on what I need to do. So please recruit me!

I highly doubt it. Mweb has confirmed you WILL not get shaped based on consumption. If you use like 500GB you deserve to be shaped. Just my opinion.

Mweb clearly said this is NOT for downloading warez. But some many people exceeded 300GB+ and Mweb is not Disconnecting them. So people complaining cause of shaping cause they use 500GB+ Should get lost!

I'm definitely not picking up increased shaping due to my 200GB already downloaded.

Those are two totally separate issues.

The issue lies with the actual number. You seem to be implying that less than 300Gb is acceptable. Then why am I experiencing issues after 40Gb on my 384k service? Should that be acceptable? Why am I not allowed 300Gb at full speed?

No definitely not, 203GB and downloading at 300Kb/s +

Constantly or spikes? Or is that what speedtest shows you?

Here is my issue... I am happy with the 32.4K but not so stoked about the periods of 0K interspersed between those peeks.

Unfortunately uncapped in SA is still in a very early phase, as the providers improve their networks we'll experience better and better service delivery. If you want to get the most out of your uncapped service you need to look at 3rd party solutions to enhance your experience. Paying the little bit more works, but I can understand there are people who cant afford it or do not want to employ another solution. At this stage the entry level uncapped solution is a shaped product, and shouting and complaining won't change anything... only mweb improving their networks over a period of time will make any change or improvement.

In the meantime R99 a month extra to help improve your experience isn't that bad. But then again, to each his own.

Signed up for mweb 4mb uncapped yesterday - I'm getting about 4kb/s on torrents, and my news graph is like Lancelots.

... and shouting and complaining won't change anything...

Please can I ask you a huge favour? Please could you send some time spreading this message in the CA section? ;)

It is those of you using those third party services to boost your own individual usage that is probably having a detrimental effect on the rest of our usage.

For me any amount you are allowed to download on warez is a bonus. I am just as guilty of downloading some warez but I don't complain about poor speeds if I don't download warez fast.

Any 1 has the right to complain if they have slow speeds on browsing updates gaming ect ect. But people complain about slow p2p when they are downloading hundreds of gigs of warez.

And I'm actually referring to 4Mbit users cause they are the ones complaining. And yes you have the right to complain cause the Mweb 384k uncapped is slow and its been slow since the start.

... CA Section? :)

The keyword "probably" is important ;) ... unfortunately there is two approaches here: 1) employ these 3rd party services and enjoy our connections ... 2) save R99, buy a pizza and maybe a 2L coke... sit back and complain.

the degree of shaping varies for me each day but for me, personally, i'm happy overall with the service.

i knew it was shgaped when i started and i figured that as more people get on, it would be a bit worse.

my experience is definately better than Afrihost last month!

" You have used 276.77 GB so far this month." :D

Thanks for all the responses. Judging from the feedback, it seems that the extreme shaping of non-http downloads is not associated with high data usage. I was really hoping to find some definite pattern in all this, but I guess, for now, I'll have to buy MWebs Seacom excuse.

Let's hope it gets sorted out once all the techies are back at work tomorrow.
