Is MWeb shaping based on usage?

MWEB's RS service is going at 4KB/sec which is dismal. Even with shaping it should not go slower than about 100KB/sec. MWEB may have switched off RS access in an effort to force its users onto the UNSHAPED package. No thank you.

No. Speed seems to be related to how close to the end of the month we are. As if Mweb runs out of or restricts what cap they have left.

Three points....

1) Tanya35 i missed you!
2) Mweb doesn't buy gigs but rather connectivity. So they cant really run out of cap :S
3) Really missed you!

Thanks for all the responses. Judging from the feedback, it seems that the extreme shaping of non-http downloads is not associated with high data usage. I was really hoping to find some definite pattern in all this, but I guess, for now, I'll have to buy MWebs Seacom excuse.

Let's hope it gets sorted out once all the techies are back at work tomorrow.

Good luck finding a pattern. However I believe what you experience is how shaping handle traffic when you have dynamic unexpected load on the network. It is there to keep things mostly smooth for those that do not download and just want to view a small webpage, or those that just want to get their email right now ect. Unfortunately what is left needs to be shared between all the downloaders, and that is why it is mostly slow, but also very unpredictable (well you can't predict humans, and less so when there are A LOT of them!).

GEEZ, i am on a 384 line uncapped and get worried when i hit 40GB this time of the month, while other chaps are on 250GB. Just my opinion but there is a lot of complaining i think in a few months time when all the warez freaks realise that the internet will still be there in the morning they will slow down, please do not get me wrong i D?L the odd torrent/NZB here and here but i also purchase a lot of what i D/L. We as South African should just be happy that we have uncapped at half decent prices (still think they could be lower) thanks to MWEB starting the programme.

This is not a flamebait just how i feel, and believe me i love the net and D/L.....Peace to the people

I agree. It's human nature to look for patterns and pseudo-theories, in the absence of facts, or clear explanations of complex systems. History is filled with such examples...

Edit: It's actually easier to make predictions when a lot of humans are involved, its called statistics. That's also how ISP's are able to manage supply and demand. Unfortunately humans also have 'herd' behaviour, when everyone wants to do things at the same time, which is impossible to satisfy.

I am starting to get the feeling they are shaping my whole line. 384k uncapped consumer 55 gigs.

Are you bragging or complaining?

I'm on 384 too and "You have used 56.84 GB so far this month."

If you are complaining I don't know what for... and if you are bragging, then good on you :D

They don't use "caps". There is no throttling. Users simply experience poor speeds on heavier shaped protocols as the demand on other protocols (HTTP etc.) increases. How is this hard to understand?

I'm on 512 and so far this month:

You have used 89.84 GB so far this month.

I've only had real problems this past weekend.

I am complaining of course why would I brag about a 384k line. I just look like a hillbilly without 4mb line...

But why are you complaining?

If you download full speed at 38KB/s the whole month you should be able to download around 98GB. Its the 25th, you have done 55GB ( I know its combined usage, not just downloads) on a shaped product, I think thats pretty good.

Were you able to go 55GB 3 months back and pay R219?

If you need to do that 98GB a month get the unshaped product for R499 or find some other ISP who offers that.

I have used 179.52 GB so far this month.
I peak torrents around 200-250kb/s over night, around 50-100kb/s during the day.
