I have a 10mbps ADSL line
I have a 4mbps service from Cybersmart (First month with them after epic fail with Afrihost)
Here's the setup. I use "EMCO Ping Monitor Free" it does a good job of monitoring 2 selected WAN IP addresses; one of which is 196.1.1.2.
I setup the ping monitor as follows:
Ping interval: 10 seconds
Ping Timeout (ms): 1500
Outage condition (failed ping count): 6 (then record the event)
QUESTION?
Am I being too sensitive if an outage condition is reported between 25 and 50 times a day? I must remind you that by the time an outage is reported it's already been down for 9 seconds. The outages last on average 40 to 50 seconds.
Another thing to consider is... Are people without this monitoring tool thinking "Wow, the internet's a bit slow tonight?"
Can other's please let me know what their experiences are? I'm trying to figure out what's "NORMAL" in Pretoria. Obviously it's worse during peak time, but my peak time seems to last the whole day (exaggeration).
I've already bought a new modem, upgraded the DSL connection speed, changed providers. I could write a book on Telkom's service.
Let me know please. Perhaps we could publish a comprehensive article putting everything in logical perspective. Something like... "A South African's guide to the 'Interwebs'".
