is my fan controller the problem or is it the fan?

everything setup, working fine.

channel 1 - 1 x 120mm 1000rpm on Corsair H50 rad
channel 2 - 2 x 140mm 1000rpm
channel 3 - 1 x 140mm 1000rpm

all the fans above are Thermalright X-Silent series

Everything reporting correct speed, etc etc

I decided I want more flexibility on the CPU rad, so I plugged in a thermalright FDB 2000rpm.

PC starts up, and firstly the LCD doesnt report the RPM of the channel its on. Second thing, its stuck in a loop or 3 speed settings.

Pc starts -> 2000rpm ->500rpm ->1200rpm ->2000rpm (rinse, repeat over and over and over.....)

I plug the fan into other channels, same thing. I plug the fan into CHA01 and it works fine.

Any ideas?

What brand and model fan controller are you using?

I'm thinking that it is the fan controller that doesn't like the 2000rpm fan.

If the fan controller is very cheap, by simply varying the voltage, then that would probably explain why the fan would go bonkers like that.
The PWM fan controllers shouldn't do things like that if I'm not mistaken.

I have one of these

Its hardly a cheap fan controller so I didnt expect this to happen. The website says up to 6000rpm so I dunno...

Jog Wheel: Jog Wheel is used for adjusting Fan RPM and selecting a Fan Channel. RPM can be set from 60 to 6000RPM in units of 60RPM

I didnt try with the fan plugged into channel 4 which is the PWM channel. The other three are standard 3-wire

I will try the PWM channel when I get home I guess...

The PWM channel will only work for PWM fans that come with a 4-pin connector.

Update:
According to the Zalman fan controller's manual, you can set a minimum fan speed and I think that should fix the issue that you're experiencing with the 2000rpm fan.
I'm not sure what its minimum speed would be, but I'd guess somewhere in the region of 1200rpm.

Stupid fan... Im sure I tried to up the speed but that didnt help, still went crazy!

Yes, it has to relate to the fan specifically.

With the Coolermaster Sickleflow 2000rpm fans, I was able to run it at 7V, but they were still rather noisy.
