I've connected the ethernet cable into the ethernet port but the light isn't on. Would it light up if the ethernet cable is not connected on the router (ie the cord is only connected on the PC side)?

no milomak, the lights would only go on if the cable is plugged in on the other end too, and that device has to be switched on too.

What Pada said.

But I wouldn't use the lights to diagnose it anyway. I've had NICs w/ both lights on work fine & NICs w/ both lights off work fine too.

Try multiple ports on the router side.

i suspected the light meant nothing as when i run ifconfig, the port is seen and has a mac address.

If you've over/underclocked the PC and messed with the PCI-E frequency it can cause the LAN adapter not to work. Also the lights might only work when the drivers are loaded.
