Is my old HDD locked?

Hi there.

I have an old HDD which I used as a drive to backup to.
I need some files on the drive and put it in my All-in-1-Docking station. I can open some files and some not. When I initially clicked on the Users-folder, a pop-up said I do not have authority and I must click to continue ... which I did.

Now, some files open and some not. I need to open a few files. Attached a screenshot of how the icon looks. I don't know what the file over the icon mean. These files also cannot open. The example screenshot is of a Photoshop file I need to open with Gimp ... which it can since I have opened up other PSD files on my local drive.

Can anyone please advise what I need to do to access these files?

Which OS are you using?

You can try to change the folder/file permissions. You can also try a linux liveusb.

Download Puppy Linux. Make a bootable USB. Run Linux in memory of your pc. Access your hard drive. Copy files and paste.

If it is windows hdd, that you pulled out of a machine.... you have to give your user permission to access all files :

sounds like NTFS permissions issue

You need to change ownership of the folder to yourself. There are a guides on youtube on how to do that while inside of windows

OR

As above, the quickest answer is to run a live version of linux and copy paste out of the folder to another external location (not to the internal HDD running windows - again, NTFS permissions are dumb).

If it was from a Windows Pro OS installation it may have been EFS encrypted, in which case access to the files may be permanently lost.

You can also try connecting the drive up to an XP computer or booting from an XP Based Live CD like Ultimate Boot CD for Win. XP tends to disregard permissions set in Windows 7 and up in the same way that Linux does.
