Thought I would post this here... Currently I connect my PS3 to my TV via HDMI. As my surround sound has no optical in I am running 2 RCA leads from my TV to my surround sound for the sound. Doing this I assume this does not deliver true surround sound?

What would be the best possible way to get true surround sound from my PS3? Is getting a surround sound system with optical in the only way so I can connect my PS3 to the surround sound directly?

You will only be getting stereo
Yup, to get surround sound you need the audio from either the optical out or HDMI out ports. Once the HDMI audio gets to your TV it gets converted to stereo

If the PS3 has the option set it to send Dolby Surround over HDMI. That way you should at least get a mono surround channel.

what kind of surround sound system do you have? any chance of a link?

sorry, no dice with that amp. stereo via the RCA inputs only.

Only way then would be optical cable from PS3 to an optical-in on a surround sound system that supports it?

correct, though these days we prefer HDMI. If you have restricted cashflow however, optical or digital coax will do the trick for normal DD or DTS surround. When you have a budget & have thought about it a bit, we can advise on that too.

or HDMI to an amp that supports it but you looking at R4k+ for something that supports more the passthrough

Not sure if you know the PS3 but it has 1 HDMI out only which I use to connect to the TV and since my TV doesn't have a HDMI out and my surround sound's 1 HDMI port is only an out as well, the cheapest thing I'll be able to do is get a surround system that accepts optical in... Any reasonably priced suggestions?

How would I do that, though, as the PS3 has 1 HDMI out only and it goes to the TV? See my post above for more details.

Thanks for the help so far, guys. Appreciate it.

Ja i do, i have a PS3
1 HDMI cable carries video & audio so it only ever needs 1.
The preferred way is HDMI cable to amp, then amp HDMI out to TV
Amp will play the sound & TV will get the video from the amp

Ah... that makes sense. So essentially I need a surround system that has a HDMI-in as well as HDMI-out?

right. HDMI out to the TV, and a couple of HDMI ins. One for the PS3, one for HD-PVR..... you get the picture.

And I can select on the surround sound which device should be "active"? E.g. PS3, DVD player, HD PVR, etc.?

Yup, audio & video will be changed with 1 button giving you HD video & surround sound audio from whichever source device you select

that's why we have have A/V receiver's. it's just so handy and nice and groovy.

Now to find a receiver and speakers that won't break the bank...
