Hey guys,

Been muling this over in my head since I upgraded my GFX card to a Ati 5850 and I wonder if it would be worth upgrading my CPU and Mobo and maybe ram?

Currently running a E8200 @ 2.6 on a Asus P5ND mobo.

Was thinking maybe

Mobo: ASUS Intel P55
CPU: Core i5-650 Dual Core LGA1156 3.2GHz 4Mb Cache

Whats your thoughts?

Is an upgrade even necessary?

Yep, it is bottlenecked. Get atleast an I5 750 and a P55 board and that will improve things quite a bit.

The 650 is a dual core mind you.

I see the I5 770 actually isn't much more, so you reckon that is decent?

Well if you don't want to switch to DDR3 / new board / new cpu, you COULD bump your cpu up to a Q9550 / Q9650 or even a QX9770 but you'd have to clock it a bit to use the full performance at the card.

Like the others have said, defenitely being bottlenecked by your cpu. i5 750 is a Quad Core and they clock easily to 4ghz.

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda figured when I bought the 5850 that I would have to upgrade.

So would the I5 750 + the Asus P7P55D be a good match?

Yup sounds good to me. Also depends on what you play but as more and more games are console rips dual core cpu's will struggle.

If you are playing games that won't use more than 2 cores then there is no bottle neck but you may as well as just get a quad because you will end up having to anyhow.

A good example is bfbc2, that game struggles on a dual core :D

So you saying the I5 770 is the best bet? That is a quad correct?

I play a lot of MW2, Just started Metro 2033 and Batman AA, I do play BC2 but we not the best of friends at the moment :p

Batman AA loves more cores. Either way as doob said more games are going into that territory so you might as well follow. Havent heard of the 770, from the looks of things the 750 is the best i5 out there now but i could be wrong

Instead of opening new thread i have the same question. Running a Q8400 with 4GB DDR2 and a Gigabyte EP43-UD3L. My Gigabyte ATI 5850 OC is getting delivered hopefully Monday or Tuesday.

Well the CPU will kinda bottleneck it. But then you can't even appreciate it's full graphics potential unless you get a 30" 2560x1600 screen! So ya, it's still fine for now, in my opinion.

Or Eyefinity.

If you want a buyer for that EP43-UD3L though, I'm your man ;)

yup had a similar situation with my 5970 and q6600. CPU just couldn't take the load( think i was missing 12k points with 3dmark vantage.

upgraded now to the I5 (quad), and everything seems much better now..

guys, if you remember I had a thread on this a while back... just search! (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?218876-ATI-5850-with-Intel-Q9550)

I had a Intel Q9550 and bought myself a ATI 5850 OC. My 3dmark scores were totally borked... Coulnt figure it out. Did EXTENSIVE testing on all sorts of PC's and final conclusion was that the Q9550 was holding the card back a LOT!

So I went and bought a new CPU, MB and RAM. I got a AMD 965 Black Edition... best thing ever! :) Havent looked back! I ran it stock speed and my speeds SHOT up... in line with what they SHOULD be.

The VERY interesting thing was, that in my opinion, the card it still being held back. The BE has an unlocked multiplier (as you know) and I bumped that up, and my FPS continued to rocket up. Im not talking about 1 or 2 FPS here from just a CPU bump, Im talking about unlocking the GPU potential by bumping the multiplier.

So thats also something for you to think about! :)

Yeah unfortunately when making a vast upgrade to one component usually means the rest have to follow suite.

I think I have my head set on the I5 750 and the Asus P7P55D. If anyone can suggest a better mix I am all ears, within reason of course :D

One question though will my current DDRII ram work on this board for now? Will upgrade to DD3 ram next month.

Sounds perfect. No you have to get DDR3.

Will my system bottleneck with a 5970

MSI p45 plat
4GB DDRII 1066
Q9450 running at 3.2GHz
don't worry about other things.

I was thinking of getting myself a 5970.
