Hi all,

Just a quick question about the IS news server, I am not getting any throughput at all, is there something wrong with this news server or is it always so slow over the weekend.

I usually use the SAIX news servers but wanted to try the IS one.

Are there other IS news servers, or any other settings I should be using?
I know that Telkom now has two servers.

I am using GrabIt as my download manager.

Full speed ahead for me right now.

remember you need a IS account to use the IS news servers. if you have a SAIX account you can only use the SAIX news servers.

Aware of that, I am using an OpenWeb 30GB IS account.:)

The server details that I am using are news.is.co.za port 119, which is correct right? :D

That is correct. IS servers dont handle uncached files particularly well but you should still be able to connect.

All that I get is erratic spikes that get me maybe 2MB in an hour, wtf.

Yep - its fine when acquiring popular files but otherwise it's not very useful.

Are there any specific settings for the IS server on Alt.Binz cause it cannot connect the the IS server.

Ok Now this is totally weird. A file that is cached on the IS news server and still am not getting any throughput. What am I missing?

Come to think of it there are actually settings you could try:

"Setup" -> "Connection"

Then change both "Global connection timeout" and "XPAT connection timeout" to 999, this has been reported to help in certain circumstances :)

This is a must. The default time settings are insufficient, especially if you are trying to download something that is uncached.

Thank you, any other settings that I should know of. Never use Alt.Binz. Usually I use GrabIt so not familiar with Alt.Binz at all. :)

Use ARTICLE cmd in server setup. The rest of the setup is personal preference. You definitely want to auto par and auto unrar, saves a lot of time, hassle and bandwidth. You should be able to just load nzbs and, once they are done downloading, find the finished products in your designated unrar folder.

Is there any advantage of using 1 connection opposed to 5 on the news server?

When using 1 connection, you allow more users to be connected to the server at the same time. I still don't know why they even allow more than 1 connection from the same IP though.
Only reason I can think of is to allow you to download from multiple PC's behind the same router.

Maybe we should ask Mecurial, since his our Newshost rep?

If you have a 384 line then 2 connections is all that is necessary on cached stuff (maxes out the line AND does not have the short gaps between article pieces that occur when you have only 1 connection). This will help other users make a connection as has been mentioned above, so it doesn't help you but it does help the wider user base.

On a faster line (esp. 4096) you may need all 5 connections on cached stuff to get full line speed or close to it.

On uncached stuff (most stuff that is not new/popular) you will maybe get like 2 KBps per connection so in these cases it is best to maximize the number of connections you have IE go for 5.

TheLoot, I was able to get my full 4mbps with 1 connection. It rarely happens that I max out my line from the IS server.
As for the uncached stuff on news.is.co.za, I never even get a few bytes/s.
