Has anyone else found that almost EVERYTHING downloaded off the news server is totally corrupted, so badly that even with extra parity files they cannot be repaired. This is after trying to download using nzb's for serveral tv episodes and movies and so far from downloading almost 3gigs,its all been worthless due to being corrupt!

Yip tried to download lost ep 13 &14 the other day... I am back to ITMS for my shows again.

And the speed is terrible as well. It's been like this from Tuesday.

the speed...

yea, the speed sucks aswell, its almost like they shape from 8am till 5pmish and cut the news server bandwidth in half, get max 16kb/s!!! even if i have multiple connections!

Agreed, but if you use "Newsbin Pro v5.0" just select corrupted posts and select retry download. It will then download all missing/corrupted parts.

The reason for the errors are due to disconnects with the news server ;)

Ditto that - I was going to suggest the same thing. I get many "red blocks", select RETRY a few dozen times, and it all comes down at last.

I will say it one or more for all to hear "Use Newzbin PRO - by far and away the best newsreader out there, you've tried the rest, now use the best!" :D

Have you tried verifying by other means (like yabse) that its IS? I know loads of ppl using other servers have been having problems with posters such as tehserver

I emailed IS about this. They are "aware of the problem". Its really pathetic. They shape their services so badly in the day, that you cant even download off their own newsgroup from their own backbone.

Normally if u download after 5 its fine, but lately, I can only start downloading at about after 10. Else it will just time out, and give me errors that the files dont exist.

The 30 gig local they give you, doesnt mean much to me.

I use Grabit and select "Retry automatically" or whatever. Hardly ever have any corrupt files.

I've heard that IS only downloads the header files to their server automatically. As soon as someone requests an article they pull it from an EU server, meaning that if you're the first person to request something you'll suffer from disconnects until the files have been transferred. Obviously they then cache those articles and the next people have no problems.

Hearsay, but from a pretty trustworthy source and it sounds logical.

Sounds plausible - would explain why news is slow when international is down.
But the caching is interesting - I had no idea that so many people shared my interests in midget goat pr0n. :D

I also use Newsbin Pro and after a couple of retries get most of the time 100% working files (and all of the time files that can be repaired). Download speeds have been ok for me for the last week or so.

What dabean is saying makes sense. It is much easier to download 'popular' files.

automatic retry??

just to add my name to the list of frustrated IS server users. BTW when u guys say u use newsbin and grabit and automoatically retry failed downloads does it mean that if the files was 15 000KB and only 10000 kb was d/l when it retries, all 15000 id d/l again..reason I'm asking is that obviously affects cap.
p.s i use newsleecher

The post is usually broken into parts of varying sizes, and then the file is broken into bits (RARs etc).
So, Lost Season 1 Ep 1 may be 15 RARs, each one 14MB, and each of those 14MB may be 2000 messages. A retry will only redownload (or retry) the messages it did not get - not the messages it has.

Clear? If so, you understand better than I explain! :D

silkman posts to usenet are made in small chunks (I think 256KB per chunk). Thus Newsbin will only retry the failed chunks. In most cases less than 5% of the original file.

retry

no guys what i mean is i have all 47 rar files of a post right...but 30 of the files are only downloadedi in part eg 10000 out of 15000 kb so if i retry will i have to dowlnoad the whole file again???

ive noticed the slow speeds and disconnects, but using grabit ive never suffered from corrupt downloads.

edit :
i take it back, is news server is screwed and all my files are corrupt!

No, with Grabit the file will resume from the last position. So you can stop the download and resume your download the next day without needing to download the entire rar file from the begining.

Does this answer your question ?

no - provided you are using Grabit or newzin pro or another decent news reader..

i little bit late but here is what i do if i get corrupted files via IS news server and its irritating 400 service discontinued errors....

download quickpar.....its small around 500k

use the included sfv and/or par file to verify ur files....if there aint to many parts missing just download one or two or all of the par2 (parity) files that shud have come with the post as well..if they didnt..go look for them on www.binsearch.info ....95% of posts include them tho....

these par2 files then correct and fix the damaged/corrupted files...i dont exactly know how it works..but heck...it does...and the files/avi's or whatever come out perfect...no glitches etc what so ever...
