IS news server?!?

i little bit late but here is what i do if i get corrupted files via IS news server and its irritating 400 service discontinued errors....

download quickpar.....its small around 500k

use the included sfv and/or par file to verify ur files....if there aint to many parts missing just download one or two or all of the par2 (parity) files that shud have come with the post as well..if they didnt..go look for them on www.binsearch.info ....95% of posts include them tho....

these par2 files then correct and fix the damaged/corrupted files...i dont exactly know how it works..but heck...it does...and the files/avi's or whatever come out perfect...no glitches etc what so ever...

I seldom download anything unless it has a PAR set - those PAR sets are the best thing since forever :D

grabit

ok so u guys have convinced me to change from newsleecher. which is better grabit/newsbin? also are there guides available for setting up all the options so partial downlaods etc as you guys have stated , are corrected? thanx

Newzbin gets my vote - I have downloaded (literally) 100s of GB with it.
Easy to use - when it downloads, it marks missing parts in red, when done, simply highlight those parts and select retry - easy as 1,2,3

grabit

have just been looking for download sites for grabit. is version 1.60 stable??
also it newsbin free??

Newzbin is around 200 good ol safrican rands. Well worth it IMHO.

I was also using NewsLeecher for a long time and even bought it, however it has become useless on the IS news server due to its handling of the #400 error so often returned (it never retries that segment and produces a corrupt, undersized file).

I recently switched to NewsBin Pro and it eventually manages to download everything I want, albeit with numerous manual "retry download" commands from me.

The other day I discovered http://sourceforge.net/projects/sabnzbd/ and all I can say is WOW! While I would still prefer NewsLeecher's interface, SABnzbd is just what the doctor ordered. It is low on resource usage, completely free, automatically handles all PAR2 processing (downloading only what is required), and automatically retries a download until it has completed it. Give it a try!

Decoding...

Thanks for the link Mr BishopZA ;)

Although not using IS News Server i have come across probs using grabit in regards to decoding were a file would download but not decode and ends up with no extention in your Grabit/Cache/Articles folder and what you would use is a program to decode these manually [perhaps this is one of the problems u may be having :p ] get the free software called yEnc32
read more about it here and download from here its only 710kb :)

before i forget do make sure to grab the complete group list as that was the source of the above problem, other issues may lead to the same solution. Grouplist is not that big in comparison to the headers

Yuu

thanks

thanks Bish gonna give them both a try and see....Moederloos thanks but first wanna try the free stuff ;) R200 can be put to better use if i can get sumfing for nuffing

jhow good is this new server

can you get just about anything?

I have yet to see anything listed on newzbin.com that I could not get on news.is.co.za. IMHO it is at least as good as giganews.

OH MY SACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BishopZA...dunno where u find dis kuk...but SWEETTTT!!!!
downloaded..installed..was a bit of a strange way to setup...but its working like da bomb!!!

Download speed: 52.52 kb/s - Queued: 750.32/794.72 MB ----- hehehehehee
now i can actually sit back and not stress about the stuff coming down corrupted since it keeps retrying the part that got dropped...HEAVEN ekse!
mebe now i can stop wasting bandwidth in needing to redownload sum of the files....

this is certainly the way to go for IS news server...even during the day....

Bish if u where a chick i wud ask u to have my children...but hey..such is life! :p :p

oh and btw. yes i have so far found everything i wanted via IS news server......

As far as I can tell (by studying communication logs), the IS news server actually retrieves the articles from GigaNews and caches them locally. That's why IS also has 70-day retention (just like GigaNews) and why it's much faster and less error-prone to wait a few hours before downloading something new (increasing the chances that someone else has caused the files to be cached locally).

sabnzbd?

to MrBishop..sorry im a relative noob..how do u get this thing to run. tried running the .exe but didnt succeed.

SAIX and news servers

Well I have my ISADSL account and a SAIX, is there anyway to use the IS news server from SAIX with my login details? Otherwise is giganews the best option signup for? Anyone have any recorded speeds from it?

AFAIK there's no way to connect to the IS news server from any account but an IS one. As you have 2 accounts you can try connecting to both accounts at once. See this for more info:

It is counter productive to do this. The SAIX account is most likely hard capped with a small cap to boot. The IS local cap is 30GB+. Using the SAIX one would be way more costly.

As the post below yours states, rather do a dual logon, and route news.is.co.za over the ISDSL.

I use easynews and find it to be great - especially the http download speeds which - if you use a download accelerator such as reget are 100%.

wow thanks for that - i too was a fan of newsleecher (until the recent IS problems with incomplete downloads) - but SABnzdb is so simple its great and it works well.
