I do not mind the name changes, IF....
1. Do not cost much.
2. Even if in another language, be something neutral, not a person's name, or 'death to all whities' or something like that.
3. Our african languages do have words that roll nicely of the tongue. By all means use some of those nice names.

I recall some time ago they wanted to rename Cape Town to something. DO not recall what, but the name was actually easy to pronounce and sounded cool.
eThekwini is actually one of these, but the issue is it replaces Durban which is about the simplest city name in the entire country.

Depends what you mean by important. As in actually beneficial to the country or people, then no. For the purposes of distracting people as part of your campaign to hold onto power, then yes.

In 50 years from now there will be hardly any sign of colonization or Apartheid left. All statues will be gone, cities and roads renamed, old infrastructure dismantled.

Any talk of blaming colonization or Apartheid and a whole generation of people will look around and scratch their heads not having a clue what government are talking about.
I blame Apartheid for all that renaming and destruction of infrastructure. See they'll be able to keep up the blame game.

Nah I think rename all you want, coz you gonna do it anyway, leave the good old and successful area names in peoples memories instead, and let those be remembered as such, so that the world can see everything the Gov touches turns to crap.

It IS important, but not AS important as other pressing social issues like service delivery, income inequality, crime and poverty. Once you have solved or addressed all of those issues, then you can move on to other issues like geographical naming, etc. it is ludicrous in a country like South Africa, that we have to borrow money to roll out a vaccine, but we waste money on things like this.
And if they addressed all those there'd be no need for changing names to distract the population and garner votes.

Its VerwoeRdburg. You keep on spelling it wrong. Verwoedburg means Very Angry Town
I'd be very angry too if I had to live there.

I'm okay with renaming Pietermaritzburg to "Dumpburg" or "Smogville" because thanks to mismanagement the dump seems to catch fire and choke us in its noxious smoke, which seems to now be PMB's defining feature. That and lumpy roads....
