Dear ADSL users,

I'm sure a lot of you are aware of the terrible level of service affecting the IS ADSL network (I am told SAIX too) at present. I can't tell you when it will be fixed, but I can give you the following update:

UPDATE: Sentech reported outage is due to power failure on a core router in Rosebank.
IMPACT: Packet loss
STATUS: Implementing solution

AFFECTED SERVICES: ADSL
AFFECTED POPS: National
GRADE OF SERVICE IMPACT: Major Degradation
SERVICE IMPACT: Packet loss
CAUSE OF EVENT: Cause unknown at present
TIME: 31-1-07 15h22
OUR REF: N/A
CURRENT STATUS: Investigating
ATTENDING: Upstream Service Provider

Hope this doesn't last too much longer! I'm sure alot of you are waiting to finish off those month-end GBs!

Thanks for the info Equinox.

Does this affect only international traffic? I can't even get onto MSN.... but local is flying!

"The Major Degradation in International ADSL Service has been resolved. Service has been restored.
Sentech restored power to core router in Rosebank."

Thanks, why are Sentech providing services to SAIX and IS anyway?

To add to the problems,

Eskom has warned us of possible outages in the next 7 days. So everyone stock up on fuel for the generators, and lets hope that we can get through it

Ok so hopefully I'll be ok. For now anyway, just when they get ADSL working again they take away our power, bastards :D

Sentech carries bandwith for MTN, IS, SAIX you name it.

They carry 30% of all MTN international Voice etc.

Sentech have a international gateway license or something which they operate the satellite earthstation under, adsl for IS uses satellite, hence sentech is in the picture :)

A core router --- don't they have fallback power in place on a critical thing like this?

Baaaaahhhhhh....

Remember the actual power supply in the router could have blown, doesnt always have to be the grid thats down :P

and for my 3rd post in this topic, i can browse international sites... but anything else, eg SSH is broken
