I’m using a Telkom 4Mb home uncapped account and my normal browsing is very sluggish.
Congestion was the obvious thought but after a trace route I’m not so sure.

Following is an example of what I’m referring too:

The following was done with my Afrihost account:

I'm not happy Telkom internet.

There have been quite a few articles on this site that have reported on Telkom being more heavy handed with their shaping policies.
They have become just as awful as MWEB now.

There's definitely a problem with TI today, very unusual for PE, as you say traceroutes etc seem OK but performance is terrible.

More comments in the TI uncapped thread.

I'm aware that the ISP's are clamping down on peer to peer but I'm referring to Google, MyBroadband and the like. Those are not supposed to be affected.

Thanks Mick, I've read the comments in the Uncapped thread.
I thought something else was going on. Hopefully Telkom will fix it soon.

Oi, stop what you’re doing, you’re making it worse. :D

Test completes the ping at 79ms and then stops.

Time to bring in the big guns, Telkom Mobile to the rescue.

TI ADSL has been shocking recently. Today had almost no access to anything for about an hour.
I dunno if it's shaped or what as its much better now.
Had to switch to 3G backup.

Centurion and Bellville I believe are still due IPC upgrades, their transmission should be completed by the end 9f this week.

We had ordered additional IPC links for Cape Town amd Gauteng some time back intending them to be operational before the iOS8 release. The transmission for those links should be completed today, but it might take a bit longer until the IPC capacity can be provisioned, so probably not in time to alleviate the problems cause by iOS8.

@ponder - If it is due to limited IPC with iOS8 updates should it not affect my mobile account in the same way?

Yes, and it should affect other ISP's. Hence the iOS 8 excuse appears to just a cover for some slackness.

@MickeyD – When I did a test to Johannesburg with my ADSL account it did not complete. I don’t know if my exchange routes somewhere else.

Test with my mobile account to Johannesburg is also faster than Cape Town.

I'm lucky to have access to both, I feel for the people who rely on ADSL at the moment.

Your exchange routes to your city's main exchange (I won't name it to retain your anonymity) and from there to Sidwell (in PE) and then via George to Cape Town. That is the standard.

You can change it by using different DNS settings in your router/modem.

This is really weird I've switched back to TI and all seems good but the MyBB speedtest pings CTown @ 850ms, Int @ 1100ms, J'Burg @ 75ms
