I was told by a Telkom salesperson yesterday that they are upgrading all 384 lines to 1Mb on 1 September. Is this true?

Yes, but did you ask which year?

Understand it is during October

So I need to organise the net at home and after years of struggles, they've finally opened up new ports in my area. So if I were to subscribe to the 384 package I will get an automatic bump up to 1Mb, but if I subscribe to the 1Mb, I get bumped to 2Mb? Is this how it is working?

Yes, but 384 will only get the speed increase during October.

Can someone point me in the direction of good 1Mb/2Mb ADSL deals? I haven't been looking out for it lately and there are just too many confusing options...

Its nice to get something for (nearly) nothing. We have waited long enough. Was recently in Morocco where you get chased down the street by beggar kids. Entry level ADSL is 4mb and costs €18 a month.

Axxess, Cybersmart, Web Africa

I just returned from Singapore where uncapped, unshaped 100Mb/s ADSL cost me the equivalent of about R500/month including line rental, and where uncapped mobile broadband was dirt cheap too...

If you go for 1 mbps, I can't recommend MWEB highly enough - It's R199 for the account.

Their 2 mbps is going to be R369 I think, which is a bit steep.

Well I'm looking at ditching DSTV in favour of streaming sport, and I'm not a fan of shaped products, so I might go the 4Mb, 50GB capped option through Axxess - looks a good deal and I've heard good things about them. Works out to around R700p/m...

50Gig not going to last you very long if you stream and use the line for anything else.

Man i really want to get in on this action. 384 -> 1mb is a nice jump.atleast there is an improvement, even though its slow.

It's a mother of a jump. I had 384 for almost 6 years... finally upgraded to 1Mb, and I'm quite content with it. It's just not 100% for 360p Youtube.

4Mbps is just not enough for 1080p videos :( Going to party the day Telkom decides to upgrade me.

Just sport. I've got plenty of content as it is to keep me entertained...

I suppose with a cap you can gauge how much you will use going forward. Just saying I use up about 50 gig in a week and a half. 12gig usage on my tablet alone this month.

I hardly download enough to warrant more than 50 gigs. Besides, I can top-up as and when necessary and there are no restrictions like the uncapped accounts...
