Is the HD PVR worth it?

Yes! Also one must not be critical of South Africa's great strides with protecting and embracing monopolistic capitalism!

I disagree with you here.

Multichoice never tried to be a monopoly, in fact, they were looking forward to the competition that Telkom Media would bring to the market....then Telkom sold it off to a Chinese company/consortium and did what they do best....a runner.

I think Naspers's whole idea with DSTV was to give South Africans choice....guess they all got bored of SABC.

I'm just really happy that I've got an alternative to SABC! And it's not DSTV's fault if there's nothing good on TV.....but it seems there's better stuff coming our way. Particularly looking forward to 'The Pacific' series by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. The trailer looks great!

So... do you know anything about this industry (does not look like it) or are you one of those serial complainers? Seems to be a lot of them around MBB.

DSTV's captured market price for the HDPVR is at least twice that what you pay in competitive markets elsewhere

DirecTV subsidizes their boxes. They have 18 million subscribers.

My guess is the price will remain high until terrestrial digital with HD comes along to compete.

DTT in HD won't happen in the near future.

Or, if a compatible box is supplied by a third party. Anyone know if this is a legal possibility?

Not possible...

!

I was more or less refering to the average South African's apathy to being trodden on, sqeezed and ripped off. By greed ridden conglomerates that have far too much free reign.

It's the "Yes Boss" mentality that has to change, if we are ever going to have our voices heard.

Defending any companies' overpriced products is just daft.

I do know that I have Multichoice on my TV at the moment and that they are the only functioning Pay TV operator I can choose from. Some would say that is a Monopoly.
Better to be a serial complainer than a serial doormat

The Box for DirectTV I refer to is an independent item from Amazon. Subsidized? maybe. Ask Multichoice what 'sudsidize' means and they'd squirm in their seats.

That would be a shame, it's fully fledged elsewhere

Not (legally) possible

kingrob, i do just wana get 1 but whats the point if it gives problems. Im very impatient and it sounds lyk the hdpvr will jst piss me off.

Fee, three weeks ago I would've told you to stay away from the HDPVR but not anymore. I was on my 5th decoder, (MultiChoice kept swopping it out as being 'faulty') recordings weren't recording, screen going black or green, sound problems etc. etc. etc. - the list is endless! Then I put in a second HDPVR in my bedroom and the new installer put in a bigger satelite dish and I haven't had a problem since then!

The installation is crucial and it's best to AVOID Aerial Excellence even though MC recommends them.

A lot of problems are installation related. There is some very dodgy "installers" out there.

Thanks for all the response every1 but i have 1 more question before i buy. Is there any possible way to upgrade the HDD or addon something to enable the PVR to record for longer hours. Obviously once more HD channels gets released one would only want to record in HD which you only get 50hours of.

Can anyone tell me, has the issue where your buffer gets lost if you use the supersport zone been fixed in the latest update?

1. Ethernet port is disabled - possibly for future use.

2. The remote is universal ie. programmable.

According to MC :

" In addition, work has started on an entry level HD PVR which will have a smaller hard disk capacity and will only offer view 1/record 1. This decoder is set for launch next year, however no date or price for this decoder have yet been confirmed. "
