Is the time on Afrihost's RADIUS server incorrect?

I have recently moved from uncapped to capped with Afrihost, and I have been extremely diligent in queuing my downloads for the hours between 00h00 and 06h00. In fact, as a test, I have specifically ONLY used this account for my after hours download and my graphs prove that no traffic has passed through the account outside of those hours.

Yet somehow, I have chewed up 1.2GB of "anytime data" according to ClientZone....

Are you connected to the account during the day as well?

Good luck with your query.

I gave up trying to sort out subtle issues like that with Afrihost. In my two cases they didn't actually take the detailed data that I sent them, and have it analysed by an experienced engineer. They seemed to stonewall and rather play dumb and send trite, irrelevant responses. Eventually I gave up. I didn't even bother to send through a recent query.

I had a similar problem to yours a while back. I would change to another ISP well before month end but their systems showed usage for a new month. Most frustrating and never resolved

Just go to a different ISP; these guys' support and engineers are useless.

Indeed I've had better support and faster turn around from Telkom, and that's saying something.

It's nothing do to with afrihost.
Telkom sends the isp a dump of session usage data every hour. But not on the hour. So your usage could be counted from 11:30 till 12:30 for the 12 o clock segment. Or from 11:55 to 12:55.

Afrihost have a work around for the time between midnight to 6am, I've tested the midnight to 6am period on a free 1 gig account on a 40mb line, no data was used between the daytime period during my testing.

Don't get confused, there are workarounds for the hourly session reporting from Telkom it's just whether the ISP is willing to implement them or not.

incorrect.

As has been stated in previous threads Afrihosts new network was Constructed with the help of Sandvine. All layer 7 traffic inspection, aswell as traffic usage/capping/throttling would be handled by their Sandvine systems.

Telkom may send usage based statistics via their old ip activator system, but ISP's would not use this data in the construction of their shaping/capping systems. ISP's are not charged for IPC usage, only capacity, so the QOS'ing happens on the ISP's end.

Thank you!

I've heard this "Telkom only sends usage statistics every hour" thing thrown around before and suspected it was a load of shyte in this day and age.

We are working on updating the ClientZone to effectively display the After-Hours bandwidth, as at the moment it can appear to be a bit confusing. Would you mind PM'ing me a screenshot of the bandwidth usage or posting it here? I just want to make sure that there is nothing amiss.

Well, it's a bit late now unfortunately, as my 5-minute graph only shows the previous day. But I've been doing similar since the original post, so here's the current graph.

To be fair, no extra "anytime" data has come off since originally posting. All I can be sure of is that no traffic has passed through this account in the month of January outside of the hours between midnight and 6am.

Hopefully it was just some anomaly.

Thank you for the update! :)

If you notice anything strange, let us know immediately, we'll gladly look into this and correct any errors that may have happened. :)

Broadband remote access servers (BRASs) / edge service routers (ESRs) / border network gateways (BNGs) will send RADIUS interim accounting updates every x minutes, where the RADIUS authentication response (Accept) can specify this interval. Telkom Wholesale enforces a minimum of 60.

Of course, as stated, with IPC the ISP sees all subscriber traffic and can thus do their own accounting. Telkom Internet does this, which is why we were the first ISP to offer free NightSurfer to all our soft-cap customers.

The OP should ask Afrihost to supply 'Bandwidth by subscriber' and 'Quota consumption by subscriber' reports to compare to his bandwidth graphs.

As per ranger's response above, Don't believe everything you read on the internet ;)
