I live alone and when I want to boil an egg I need to put water into a pot, put pot on stove, wait for stove to heat up, wait for water to boil, add egg... this takes forever...
Isn't there a plug in electrical device that can boil small amounts of water for.. say 1 egg or 1 portion vegetables or 1 portion rice etc. etc. etc.
I would imagine something like a kettle but where it was thermostatically controlled.

Gas stoves work so much better.
Boil water in kettle, pour boiling water into small pot on gas stove = instant boil.

Yeah, its called an oven.
180 deg @ 10 mins and your egg will be done.Might have to play around with heat and time because ovens differ, but this is how i make 5 eggs daily in the morning.

Microwave egg poacher :p (just be sure to prick the yolk else you have a speggtacular eggsplosion

I don't have a gas stove or I wouldn't have this problem :)

Might be worth looking in to. Those stoves are cheap. Not sure of the initial cost of a 3kg gas bottle, but refill costs you under R100. It's really quick and efficient when you want to boil stuff.

What you are imagining is exactly a kettle. You can just put the required amount of water in one of those, you don't have to fill it up every time you boil it...

Agreed. It would need to have a large opening "lid" and preferably thermostatically controlled to cater for other foods.
Now, to track down such a beast :)

It is an option. I'll have a look see what's out there.

Or skip the "boil water in kettle" step by putting the pot on an induction plate.

We have this, works great

R150 or something (all the variation do the same thing, just rebranded to your favorite

For the egg, see post above.
For the 1 portion of veggies I put said portion into a dish, cover with cling wrap and put in micro for 10 minutes.

Rice...not so sure.

We have a similar one. Works perfectly. Used every day. Used for boiled eggs and poached eggs. Bought ours from PnP Hyper.

Doesn't the cling wrap melt? Why not just put it in a microwave dish? Also contrary to popular belief you don't lose any nutrients when microwaving.
