Is this a worthwhile RAM upgrade?

I've never had any major problems with drivers on linux (only my sound card, which is a 8 channel recording interface, with really bad software support). Everything installs when you set it up and if you have some random problem there are thousands of people out there who will be able to help you (online forums).

What are the specs on your laptop? I will be able to tell you if you may run in to problems. The new Ubuntu is really quick and supports older systems very well too.

Agree

I'm in the process of upgrading and tossing an old rig. Under LINUX I've never needed to worry about drivers and the mb driver disks have been lost years back. The new user (charity case) is going to need Windows and now I need to spend a whole weekend looking for drivers.

When will Windows get its act together and implement drivers like Linux. 10yrs ago M$ claimed their next OS will have generic drivers ... and I do remember they claimed that about Vista too.

RAM story, I have 2gb, sometimes I may have 4 Opera windows with in excess of 50 tabs between them, plus Firefox with 2-5 tabs.

I can minimise these and run HL2 with no problems, not the most demanding of games but still. 8gb seems like overkill to me, unless you can really warrant it with some high end usage type stuff. HD video editing maybe?
