Cannot tell by that.

Plug in a phone and dial 101999.

Then post it here, put xxxx for the last 4 digits, e.g. 012-333xxxx

Can you guys tell me what this is exactly or must I phone telkom to find out?

I'm renting a new town house and the owners said they never asked to install anything so they think the prvious tenants did it.

Does this look like just a telephone line or could it be ADSL as well?

Hi,

It COULD be both, but highly unlikely. The only way to know for sure, plug a telephone in and listen for dailtone, if that is present, plug modem/router, and look if it sync and give you up and down strem. This way you could answer both your questions.

Otherwise, phone 10210, and hear!

If it was not the current owner but the previous resident then I very seriously doubt that ADSL will still be active on that line.

If you cannot dial 101999 then dial *1# and put down the phone. If it rings back then the line is still connected all the way to the exchange. If not, you may have a problem.

Could I ask what your concern is?

Your post makes it sound like you/the owners are surprised that there's a telephone line. You'd rather there not be one?

For the record, just because the infrastructure is in place, doesn't mean it's active or that someone is being billed for it. Presumably the previous tenants (who would be responsible for the bill) would have cancelled it before moving out.

That is just a dual RJ11 wall box with gas arrestors. There is no ADSL filter so I doubt that they had ADSL on the line previously.

Thanks for the reply guys. I was hoping it was a adsl line so that i can avoid paying installation fee.

HeHe if there is a line there or not you will still pay installation if you want it in your name , I seriously doubt some one one would let you use their line unless they knew you very well .
That is just a telephone jack .

Unless he gets a promo package that includes free installation... :p

Don't worry Michael de Waal: that type of connection gives you free internet for life at 5Gbps. You are a lucky man!

Indeed. I applied for Telkom Simple Plus. Line got installed for free and got a free router. Now I just cancelled the whole simple package upgraded the line from 4Mbps to 10Mbps and called 10210 to cancel the Telkom Internet account.

There is no contract at all. The only thing is you need to stay with Telkom ISP for 3 months if you stay on the simple package. If you upgrade your adsl line speed then they cancel the simple package and upgrade the line and transfer your retension if you don't want the Telkom ISP part.
