A co-worker of mine is leaving the country, he's offering his HYUNDAI Accent for R 10000.
It's a mid 1990s model, with over 200 000 Kilometers traveled.

In terms of reliability it SEEMS FINE, he has to be on the road for our company because he installs stuff off-site, which gives me the impression
that the car is reliable. I've been driven in it, it's quite comfortable for a sh*t car like that.

I'd just need it for going to work and back, it's got radio,cd, 4 doors, fans on dashboard (not sure if it's aircon/heater) and the seats seem fine.(as i said i've been driven in it and it's comfy).

Basically would you get the car at such a price?

Thanks.

Seems like a deal. Of course it's impossible to forecast the future. I can dig Hyundai. Our accent has done over 350 000km.

My gut feeling says get it, if it breaks down even in 2 months it wouldn't be a great loss.
Plus I wanted to get a new car, I was looking at the vivo but I thought it was crazy that the
1.4 4door doesn't have audio/abs so I started looking at used cars. Then u don't know how they've been ridden, plus I'm new to this
so if I get a used R60 000-odd car I WILL have to pay up for something to be repaired eventually.

My mother-in-law got herself a old model Hyundai too, with over 200k on the clock. Still going strong!
For 10k, it's really not a bad deal. It will last you a while still. Just keep up the services and it should last you another 100k or so, if not more.

Will the car break down a lot, or can I know beforehand if it will?

If you're really worried take it to an AA centre for a checkup bvut honestly at 10k you can't really go wrong. If it turns out that it is a lemon I'm sure you can find a dodgy second hand dealership to give you 10k for it.

It will most likely need constant small repairs, and perhaps some big ones, as time goes by. Many components from wheel bearings to the gearbox would be well on their way to the end of their useful lives.

R10k is a relatively small outlay, though. If you're happy with the drive it gives, you might want to consider it. But do have it checked out properly by someone with no vested interest in the transaction, and find out when the engine's cambelt was last changed. It'd suck monkey balls to spend R10k, only to have to fork out another R3k or more 2 months later.

Honestly it's worth about r6k but it's your choice
I'll do an inspection and try to find some excuse to get it at a lower price.

How much it will cost to get it "checked", I live in randburg and there's lots of car dealers and repair shops so I'll find where to get it checked.

Have a read here. I'd be inclined to phone the nearest Hyundai dealer & find out what they'd charge to give it a once-over.

Buy it and just drive it like a mad man. The nice thing about having a car like that to drive with in gtraffic is....

1. You don't care if a taxi tries to push you off the road. Just bump him.

You can drive this one until it packs up and then get a better car, or another one of these....

I'm also concidering buying a cheapish secondhand car as my daily run about, as the roads are getting worse and worse everyday.
