Hi guys,

Like I explained to you on my other thread, I'm selling my car. Now after reading a post on this forum from 2009 I'm wondering if I'm scammed. I posted my advert on Gumtree and I only spoke to men with Afrikaans accents. All of them promised to come and see the car and they are all from around the Randfontein area, and all of them are buying the car for their wives. But now only one is coming with his father in law to see the car. The rest of the guys cancelled. Three to be exact. We where to meet from around 6pm - gave each a different time.
One said I should lower my price, second one wanted to know the model and just sounded skeptic and the other just bailed out on me because of a commitment.

I'm just wondering if this sounds weird to you? And do you think that they are trying to get me to despair and to think that no one is going to buy my car and end up lowering the price?.

Just don't meet them alone. Also ask the guy upfront how he plans to pay and be clear on what you will accept as payment (no cheques). Lots of scammers around so be extra cautious even if you have to walk away from the deal.

Yip that sounds dodge to me. I would say try to meet in a public place with alot of folks around. Try to get friends or family watching from a distance of the meeting just to be extra cautious and i know this will make it sound paranoia'ish but try to cap a few photos of who they are. If all is good after then delete.

Rather take extra precaution :).

Just watch out, also, for any payments made into your bank account. If any money needs to "wait" to be cleared, it means a cheque has been deposited. So don't accept proof of payment slips, just CASH or EFT that clears immediately. They love to do a deposit at a bank that you still have to fill in deposit slips and slip in a "cash deposit" in the middle which the cashier doesn't check and just stamp. That one they send as proof even though they paid with a fraudulent check.

Thanks guys. I did take your advice and my dad came with me! And the guy that I met also came with his wife and dad. I think he was really genuine because I saw the wife and she is really going to drive the car. I sold it to them. And the gave me cash. All went well.

Lesson learned on the forum...never attempt to do something for the first time without advice. Getting help will eliminate potential problems. :)

Sometimes getting help will create more problems, but congratulations.
