hey guys,

trying to assist a friend in getting himself a gaming PC...

so far, here are my bits....

>Asus Intel P5N-MX All-In-One Motherboard - Socket 775
http://www.take2.co.za/product.php?id=3343070
>Asus nVidia GeForce 8500GT Silencer - 512MB - PCI-E
http://www.take2.co.za/product.php?id=2487039
>Corsair ValueSelect Memory - DDR2-667MHz - 2GB (2 x 1GB)
http://www.take2.co.za/product.php?id=3121368
>Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 CPU - Dual Core - Socket 775
http://www.take2.co.za/product.php?id=3283080

Please can sum1 assist in saying, if this would at least last him 2yrs worth of gaming...
Or to refer me with more appropriate componants...

WE looking at a R4000 budget.

Thanks

Agreed with Beanie, Maybe get a lower CPU but better Graphics like ATI HD3850 256MB (R1599 special from landmarkpc). You can always OC the CPU to achieve similar performance.

mobo will not support the E8*** series for a start and as said that gpu is a pos, min is a 3850 :)

What parts do you already have so we can realistically look at what you need within the 4k budget.

Get an E2160 CPU, which will save you a grand, and then buy the HD3850.

Go to pcint.co.za/components.asp and get the E2160 and 2 Hynix DDRII 800 1GB sticks. Then get that HD3850 special mentioned above. Then you just need a mobo...

i got myself a 2nd hand ATI x1950xtx for R1500, which is still sold for over R4000 new at some places. Its an old card, but still out-plays most current cards.

so dont always go for the newest. look out for 2nd hand bargains.

If you aren't a big ATI fan, consider getting the GeForce 8600GT. It offers great bang for you buck, especially the factory over clocked editions from XFX.

8600 is end of life this month. The 8600 even when it came out was ripped apart in reviews for being poor for gaming. It was severely limited by the fact that it has only a 128 bit bus.

The 8600 sold decently not because it was a good card but because of the halo effect of the 8800 series cards.

If you want to go nvidia on a tight budget wait till the end of the month for the 9600gt it fixes the problems of the 8600 and gives ati competition in the budget sector.

If you want to buy now get the hd3850 or look for a second hand dx9 card.

I got my 850XT second hand for R400 and it beats the 8600GT.

hey guys... thanks for all the replies...

ok, currently the system is :

AMD 64 - 2.4ghz
DDR - 1gb

200gb HDD
DVD Writer
LCD Monitor
Wireless keyboard + Mouse...
ATI - x1050

so hence the reason for upgrading just mobo+cpu+memory+gpu (since we want a gaming machine)

R4000 is our limit...

Will look into the different comments about gpu's...

not anti-ATI ;)

With that CPU you can do the following:

Get another 1GB DDR, and a 8800GT 512 or maybe even the 8800GTS 512.

Just make sure the PSU is big enough

IT's DDR 400's... cant get 1gb's...

I was considering that, just upgrading the memory and adding much better graphics card... but then an upgrade to the current system also makes it less a pain for me.. :)

PS: this is not my personal PC, it's a friends... so I rather get him upgraded once and for all... :)

Ya, get him a new mobo, cpu ram and graphics. Might need a new PSU for that though..

That's strange, since I can play all the latest games at either High or Medium-High settings. ;)

While it's far from being the best card out there, it provides excellent performance for the price. (About R1200 new). I think it also received the award for "Best Budget Card for Jan 2008". I will try to find the link to the article.

Whatever...

And it could only have had that award because its getting super cheap cause no one really wants one and there is really no competition at that low price point. I'd rather skip on everything else and get a 8800GT at R2000. 112 stream processors compared to 32 (8600), I think I know which one will win ;)
