Is using a microwave wrong?

But it makes for excellent damage control. Better to make sure the food comes out good than not to admit the fail and have your food end up as lumps of coal.

I even use it sometimes just to play it safe. Nothing like a surprising slimy piece of raw chicken. A microwave ensures just the right consistency on the inside without drying it out, on those foods that absolutely cannot be a little raw.

Would never use it on a steak though...

Have had to do that a couple times with chicken, the problem is using rubbish charcoal that burns like paper. Have a look for the hardwood variety, that will solve the problem as it burns for much longer.

Skilpadjies are foul! My family farms sheep and I just can not eat that crap when there is so much other nicer stuff to braai. Just my Zim 2c.

Nigella isn't someone you should compare with unless you want a low benchmark. She is all about speed cooking for the working class but isn't the way one should cook food imo.

I saw her "flash fry" a nice piece of steak once. Sacrilege I tell you!!!

BTW I am not a cooks ahole anyway so what do I know :/ lol. But I can sure as shyte braai a nice pice of meat :) so I am South African through and through.

If you need to use a microwave before or after you braai only one of 2 things can cause this:

1. You fail at braai'ng
2. You fail at braai'ng

or Both.

darn. so im a braai failure. oh well. :)

Just braaid skilpadjies, they caught flame and were just a little scorched on the oudside and raw on the inside. Put them in the mike for 3 mins and they turned out perfect.
Is using a mike wrong? You never see Nigella, or whoever on the cooking chan using a microwave, yet it is such a good tool to make your tasty art perfect.

You braai'd wrong my friend... eish

Skilpadjies =

From inside Cows sheep and pigs. Mix cow liver pigs bacon and stuff into sheep intestine. Made by the boere, the little round one is called a skilpadjie and the long thick one is called a pofadder.

:eek::sick::sick::sick::sick:

wtf? it's chicken liver and bacon.... wtf did you hear that ****?

The braai can be too hot. Many people don't realise this and slap the meat on as soon as they can.

yep, that and if it is too hot (because normally you'd have skilpadjies braai AT THE END with the braai-brood) you just need to turn it constantly.

Also if it's too hot and you're in a hurry, raise the wors and what not a couple of bricks higher. You won't get charcoal and you don't need to turn as often

I usually microwave the meat for 5mins on high, esp chicken and then put it on the bbq. Makes sure its done properly when i take it off.

If I had purchased my R80 steak, with the purpose of braaing that meat, then I would expect that the meat be properly sealed on a hot fire and then heated quickly to medium-rare, and then removed and immediately eaten while still fire-hot.

I would be extremely upset if somebody threw it in a microwave and completely ruined the sealing-in process.

But, chicken, you actually need a different fire for chicken, a meat fire is not a good fire for the slow-cooking requirement of chicken. I would have no problem with nuking chicken, but, then again, that's not braaing, and the chicken loses the opportunity to develop that deep smoked taste.

Side note: Why on earth do people insist on bringing chicken kebabs to a braai? They're absolutely impossible to turn. If I end up forced to braai somebody else's kebabs, unfortunately, somehow, at least 70% of the floppy meat on a stick is going to either end up in the fire or donated to the braai committee.
