First time I ate skilpadjies I thought we were genuinely trying out tortoise ... "hey, it tastes just like liver", was my first reaction.

But it makes for excellent damage control. Better to make sure the food comes out good than not to admit the fail and have your food end up as lumps of coal.
I even use it sometimes just to play it safe. Nothing like a surprising slimy piece of raw chicken. A microwave ensures just the right consistency on the inside without drying it out, on those foods that absolutely cannot be a little raw.
Would never use it on a steak though...
Only if the liver is frozen You can buy these prepacked at certain butcheries and fresh. 2-3 min per side will suffice.
If you need to use a microwave before or after you braai only one of 2 things can cause this:
1. You fail at braai'ng
2. You fail at braai'ng
or Both.

Just braaid skilpadjies, they caught flame and were just a little scorched on the oudside and raw on the inside. Put them in the mike for 3 mins and they turned out perfect.
Is using a mike wrong? You never see Nigella, or whoever on the cooking chan using a microwave, yet it is such a good tool to make your tasty art perfect.
Skilpadjies =
From inside Cows sheep and pigs. Mix cow liver pigs bacon and stuff into sheep intestine. Made by the boere, the little round one is called a skilpadjie and the long thick one is called a pofadder.

The braai can be too hot. Many people don't realise this and slap the meat on as soon as they can.If you need to use a microwave before or after you braai only one of 2 things can cause this:

wtf? it's chicken liver and bacon.... wtf did you hear that ****?
Side note: Why on earth do people insist on bringing chicken kebabs to a braai? They're absolutely impossible to turn. If I end up forced to braai somebody else's kebabs, unfortunately, somehow, at least 70% of the floppy meat on a stick is going to either end up in the fire or donated to the braai committee.
