Is version 8 the final Internet Explorer?

I doubt it. There are too many corporate environments out there where the average user has no idea that there are better browsers out there, and where that corporate will not support any other browser.

Just because you are allowed to remove it from Windows, doesnt mean that they wont stop developing it. They are most probably taking pressure off themselves by working on it in the background to bring it up to scratch with Mozilla & Google.

Even if they do ditch Internet Explorer it will take years and years for it to die. Look at how many people are still using IE 6...

Gazelle is still in prototype form and apart from the browser kernel, is built on existing IE components.
(From the original article: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Software/7135.html )

Any new kernel, logo or marketing spin they put on the new thing will still cause developers pain because of it's strong attachment to "existing IE components"

When they ditch the lot and start from scratch: truly scratch, then they might actually develop something good. Starting from pseudo-scratch with existing IE components will do them absolutely no favours.

Actually IE6 was great to develop for. Due to its overwhelming market share, clients did not bother with cross browser compatability. Ahhhh those were the days.

And again it is happy days for developers as they convert the old sites to be more cross browser compliant. The money just keeps rolling in ... Thanks Microsoft.

You know its actually only developers and certain os fanbois who I actually see complaining. For 98% of the rest of the world, one browser is just as good as the next. I have had Chrome, Firefox, and IE all crash on me, display websites incorrectly and sometimes not show anything at all. Doesn't bug me, I just open up the next browser and carry on?

How many other people out there are not exactly the same.

When they mentioned IE6, I started twitching, of all the IE browsers ever let out of hell, that was, and remains, the worst ever. Even IE7's shoddy implementation of tabs isn't as bad as IE6 was overall.

I have many fond memories of wondering wtf was going on when my ie 6 wouldnt show a page. Then I discovered the wonderful world of Firefox and Opera. I have now added Chrome to my arsenal as well. Ok admittedly I only use Firefox (every now and then chrome but haven't touched opera in years) but still. choice is good

Opera isn't usable on a lot of the banking sites :( for me anyway.

As someone who just got into web design 9/10ths of my problems stem from trying to get sites to look the same in IE, specifically 6.

I would be so euphoric to see IE die, in its entirety, but alas i'm sure that will never happen. I do think though that IE8 heading towards standards compliance can only be good thing for the web as a whole. As for Microsoft ever letting IE journey to the great beyond, it still has close on 60% market share. That means there's an awful lot of folks out there with the msn as their homepage, and live search (at least in 7...as I remember. Its been so long since I used IE) as their default search engine. Thats gotta be putting a fair amount of $ in Micro$oft. Now you consider that microsoft is also trying to launch their own "Flash" platform (aka silverlight), I think microsoft will be very keen to maintain as much control over their own browser as the web gets more interactive and web based applications start to take over. Ergo, pretty much the entire reason Google developed their own browser, to draw people away from microsoft windows apps to web based cloud computing apps like Gmail and Google Docs. Even if MS does go with Gazelle as their new engine, I would be very surprised if it actually changes much about the way a user experiences IE.
