Is Vodacom spying on me?!

My Vodaphone Mobile Connect Software, creates a folder named "ICS" which contains a file named "profiles.ezd" This file appears to contain one's preferred Mobile Profile settings. However, when I run my Anti-Spyware software, it indicates that the file "profiles.ezd" also contains the "InsideChatSpy" spyware - which is rated as a severe risk as it records keystrokes!!

Can somebody please help me understand what is going on here?

Nope, Vodacom is not spying on you, your PC has a malware infection that is spying on you and your keystrokes, nothing to do with Vodacom, but the malware has obviously chosen to infect a file used by the Vodafone Mobile Connect s/w - probably a stream type file structure in an attempt to remain hidden.
 
I scanned the file. No infection found. Seems you have a Spyware infection my friend.

I think perhaps your GF may be doing the spying :D



BehaviorInsideChatSpy is a spyware program that records Instant Message chat conversations. It may then email the harvested information to a specified email address.

Don't think so - when folder "ICS" and file "Profiles.ezd" are deleted and I then click the "VodaPhone Mobile Connect" icon on the desktop to initiate the session, I get the following message: "There are currently no profiles. Would you like to create a new profile."

If I select "Yes" and follow the prompts, a folder "ICS" and file "Profiles.ezd" are created by the software.

Any ideas how to get rid of the "infection" then? When I delete the folder "ICS" and file "Profiles.ezd" and run a spyware scan - everything checks out okay. The minute that I recreate a profile by using the "Vodaphone Mobile Connect" software, which in turn creates the folder "ICS" and file "Profiles.ezd" and I run a spyware scan - I pick-up an "InsideChatSpy" warning. By-the-way I have never installed IM on this PC.

Just done some Googling to try and find out more about "InsiderChatSpy", but there are zero results for that.

What anti-malware s/w are you using that detected it? - maybe drop them an email and ask for more details on "InsiderChatSpy" and how to remove it, also let us know what happens.
 
Its seems as if the malware/spyware is affecting the connection profile(in network connections), rather than the file itself. Or maybe i'm just sucking that out of my thumb, its just a gut feeling.

Try re-installing the software. If problem occurs again, i suggest back up your files and do a format :)

I use (the latest version of) XoftSpySE anti-spyware. The software removes the infected folder/file automatically but like I said, as soon as I use the "Vodaphone Mobile Connect" software to create a profile, the "infected" folder and file are created.

Try creating a new Connection under Network Connections (Start > connect to > show all connections.

Click on Create a new connection > Next > Connect to the internet > set up my connection manually > connect using dial-up modem > {choose your modem} > {give it a name under ISP Name e.g. Vodacom} > Type phone number *99# > Next

This will give you a new connection. Close VMC and connect directly via this connection. This will at least allow you to connect to the internet without connecting via VMC Profile

Thanks mate - this seems to be the most practical suggestion as it seems like this issue will be going around in circles forever!
 
Hope it helps. It may also be needed to add the extra initialization string (at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet") for your modem before it will work. Just look under control panel > Phone and modem options > modems > {choose your modem} > properties > advanced > and see if this string is typed under extra initialization.

Without this setting you will not be able to connect.

Which datacard do you use? If you use a Huawei E620 take a look at a wonderful little program written by Graham Inggs especially for the E620. It does basically the same as VMC, but it is about 80Kb big and it allows you to send USSD commands (*111#) to determine your data usage. Excellent.
