I have an xbox 360 and the playstaion 2 and I can't see any gaming advantages in the xbox 360?
The graphics and game quality look the same, except for gears of war which i think is really awesome, but other than that all the games I have tried are basically on the same level as PS2 games, so whats the point of the xbox 360? Ok so the multi-player in GOW is pretty cool, but its not free and if u dont pay for live gold you not going to benefit from this, so I cant really see any thing better in the Xbox 360 over the PS2 - I'm talking about the actual way the game looks and plays - I mean I gather the Xbox 360 has the 20gb hdd and probably better graphics card, memory cpu etc..but the actual games don't reflect this - for example no car game i have played on the xbox 360 even comes close to the quality of PS2 midnight racer, and I am playing saints row now on xbox360 and its just so similiar to PS2 grand theft auto, and not even as good in my opinion. Fifa world cup soccer looks exactly the same as the PS2, so basically are the games not challenging the xbox 360 yet, or am i not seeing something - so far i have tried about 11 various games and besides GOW all the rest as I said feel and look very PS2 quality.

Are you using a HDTV?

Dude, in pretty much all the comparisons, the 360 currently has a slight graphics edge on the PS3, so it's waaaaay better than the PS2.

yeh i gather in theory this is the case and i'm not disputing the technology, i'm just saying that in actual game play the graphics and the way the games play and feel dont look any better than the PS2

No dude, I'm talking about gameplay comparisions between the PS3 and 360. In otherwords, where they hook up each cosole to the same TV, play the same games and compare the graphics.

There's quite a few of these comparos on the web, just look for them. As I said, were you using the 360 on a HDTV?

Dude you should be shot....

The PS2 does not come close to the gameplay of the Xbox 360.....

Even if you personally can't see the difference, try play online :D

why do you keep asking about the tv - its supposed to be the console that makes a difference not the tv?

anyhow shot on the spot or not, you can't tell me that saints row on xbox360 plays or looks better than grand theft auto on PS2.
or that fifa world cup looks or plays any different, they both look exactly the same.

Don't get me wrong, I'm quite happy with my xbox 360 I just dont think at the moment it is any better than my PS2 in the way that the graphics are displayed.

The TV is key.

You need a high definition TV to be able to see high definition graphics, which set the 360 and the PS3 apart from other consoles.

You dont even need a HDTV, a VGA HD cable adapter & your LCD/CRT screen should be enough to run @ 720p ( 1280x720 ) and enjoy the X360 as it was designed for.

Heck, if i recall some PS2 progressive-scan enabled games still can stand the test of time quite nicely!

The games not challenging the console is absolutely right. The thing is that the games you're mentioning are all cross platform ports - the developers don't take the time to put enough effort to make the games look as best as the console can do. I've just looked at Brian Lara Cricket on the 360 and it's appaulling - almost like a Hi-res version on a PSone game. Virtua tennis is not much better. The PS2 being the most popular at the moment - games, like sports games, movie games, are written for it then ported to the 360 - so yes they will look similar - except run in hi-def on the 360 or PS3.

Gears of War is the benchmark - that is what all 360 games can and should look like. Oblivion does a reasonable job, but not the best - Crackdown has a particular art style about it but if you know what you're looking at it's very impressive - incredible draw distance and no loads. Crackdown's a good example of the difference (Comp to GTA) - scale the amount of stuff you can do and destroy is in a different league. Ghost Recon is a worthwhile mention - Even Small arms - the arcade game has some very impressive graphics. Viva Pinata, is beautiful and atmospheric and show's off lighting and effects that the PS2 would crawl up into a ball and cry about.

Examples in other ways - Battle for middle Earth - there is no way the PS2 can pull off an RTS let alone on that scale, it just does not have the horsepower. Kameo, N3 - also massive battles - scale the PS2 can't comprehend.

As far as racing games go - There's only so much one can do with a car. Having said that, PGR3 - a launch title is the only exclusive on the platform, if you want to see impressive cars, go dig up some screenshots for Forza 2, due out in May, it's gorgeous.

Which brings me to my next point - The 360 is just hitting it's stride. there's some awesome titles about due - Mass Effect, Bioshock, Forza, Halo 3 if you go dig up some (recent) screenshots or movies, they're very very impressive.

ok thanks, an answer that i can understand - so i gather that some games have been designed for the PS2 and then just converted to work on the Xbox360 and then they don't challenge the console.

I was thinking about viva pinata, just the name sounds very airy fairy, but I'll give it a shot.

Re the racing or car games, for example motogp 06 - i think that the controls they have got right because u can't just go and race you actually need to think and handle the bike, but there has been no effort on part of the game designers to work on the background - the spectators are just a blurry mess, i was expecting more from an xbox 360 game

anyhow let me go get N3 and viva pinata tomorrow and see them in action.
I was hoping saints row would be better than it is graphics wise, that was a bit of a let down, but if i've read correctly grand theft auto 4 is being released for xbox 360?

there's one game that when it comes out will accurately compare the to consoles(360 and ps3). the game is assassins creed... oh my word, what a beautiful game, it pushes the 360 quite a bit, at times almost to it's max, and pushes the ps3 a lot but the spu's aren't pushed to there full... I've heard that the graphics card is almost maxed, but the spu's come in handy and do things like lighting and physics thus not actually pushing the console to it's max still. the game will shine like an indians car's rim's, and there will be NO ps2 game that could come even close to this game, hd or no hd.

But remember that the ps3 and xbox are still very new, and the ps2 has been out for 6 years or so,, this means game developers know exactly how to work the ps2 and push it far.

Now as for racing games there is still a little work to do, as with the handling, and physics, as for the graphics, racing games are getting close to looking like real cars, but the lighting can get somewhat weird at times. but still look at gt HD, it look 6 months to get the ONE car done and those cars look absolutely amazing, but 6 months is a long time for one car.

ok, im drooling now.....this looks like it will make the xbox360 really worthwhile! Intense graphics and looks like advanced AI, can't wait!!

I hear halo 3 is also one to wait for - does it matter that I have never played halo 1 or halo 2?

Halo 2's story ended with a real cliffhanger, so if you wanna play Halo for the single player campaign and not just the multiplayer, then it's prolly a good idea to at least play Halo 2.

To really experience next gen you have to get the following
a) Hdtv
b) Surround Sound
c) Broadband

This is what separates next gen from previous gen, the games might still play the same as ps2 games but so much more is happening in the game compared to last gen, In the next few months you'll see some impressive games.

Xbox live costs money cause its a looked after service thats properly done, R400 for 1 year is well worth it, if you have adsl and an xbox360 why not pay for it cause you'll be limiting your experience with the console

You're 100% correct, what we know is that GTA IV is set to be released on the PS3 and 360 at the same time. The new very rumour is that it might get a greater degree of exclusivity on the 360, like a lead time, maybe even full exclusivity.

If you like GTA then rather than getting N3 (it's a bit "meh"), I'd suggest you get Crackdown, it's a similar sandbox idea and it's designed by the guy that designed GTA. However, you play a super cop, it's awesome, killing perps with a 10 ton globe of the world, or driving SUV's up buildings has never been so much fun :D It also has online co-op amongst other way cool stuff. http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/crackdown

The most explosive action game on Xbox 360 yet. "GTA"s suddenly got a lot to live up to.

Oh yeah, how could I forget Assassins Creed! There's also unreal Tournament 3 which looks great, and I cry every night knowing that Battlefield:Bad Company has been pushed back to 2008 (fully destructible environments). ;)

Halo 3 looks to absolutely rock. I haven't really played through 1 & 2, but you can read the back story on Wikipedia, so don't stress.
