Is Your TV Service a Streaming, Confusing Mess, Too?

When I read my colleague Tara Lachapelle’s column on Wednesday about how the “great unbundling” of cable television could turn into the “great re-bundling,” I had to chuckle. It was inevitable that once consumers got a taste of what an unbundled world looked like, they would begin to appreciate some of the virtues of the once-despised cable bundle.

Whats forgotten completely here - as with ESPN, there are a lot of people who are prepared to drop paying for content when they don't believe the value proposition makes sense.

The media industry like to treat consumers as sheep, like they couldn't possibly know what programmes they actually want to watch. I have a different prediction...

The content databases will be shared in giant deals, but will only get paid for those actually watching - oh yes, we've already been having it - YouTube... That's what'll very likely actually happen to the streaming providers.

May need to be prepared to eat my hat on this one in a couple of years time though!

The problem wasn't the bundle only, it was the "linear" nature of cable/satellite TV. Where you are forced to wait for the scheduled time to watch something, or when you wanted to watch something, there was "nothing" on TV.

What a load of hogwash. Monochoice sponspored link to Bloomberg article. Lots of but hurt cable providers over in the States in the same boat as Monochoice. Jammer om van julle k@k te hoor!

As for the article itself:
- This article compares some impossible customer out there that wants to watch ALL shows in existence on all streaming providers (Sony Vue??? WTF... BET?? WTF?) Let's be honest now...the vast majority out there are only interested in a certain percentage of shows...and it's most definitely not 100% or close to 100%. BS. Unless you are some super couch potato sitting in front of the telly 24/7. Normal folks who subscribe to 2-3 streaming services will still save a small fortune.

- The article points out what a mission it is to watch shows on all these streaming services (of which they over exaggerated as I pointed out above) compared to Cable TV. Partially true, but this is noted by Apple TV and Google Android TV who have changed their UI over the last couple of updates to show many of your favourite/subscribed/liked shows from multiple streaming providers on your home screen. This will no doubt also be done by many smart tv UI's going ahead. Problem sorted....no drama required.

I am patiently awaiting the next BS Monochoice supported article to debunk...

More than happy with NetFlix and YouTube.

This was bound to happen. What we will see is streaming services continue to increase their prices so people who only watch certain shows only save a little while those who watch all genres will pay a lot more. Funny how people asked to only pay for what they watch and now they're complaining it costs them too much.

TPB seems fine...

Personally I prefer to look for my favourite TV linux distros in the ocean and buy the BluRays later

My stargate collectors' edition box sets are still some of the coolest things I own

Why would you suscribe to all these services. You must be watching 18hrs a day lol.
I didn't think that concept was that hard to grasp.

You want to watch series A, B, C, and D. Streaming service 1 only shows series A. Service 2 shows B and C and service 3 shows D.

To watch all the series you want to watch you must either subscribe to all three services or pirate some or all of it.

Streaming is for kids....

I run plex server on a server for my TV & mobile devices. 1600+ complete mini series, 8000+ movies. 700+ documentaries. All TV shows and movies update automatically each day with new episodes. Just need to keep adding drives when space run out. The only confusing mess.... I do not know where to start when I decide to watch something.
