ISDN versus ADSL

A standard DSL384 ADSL service with a 3GB usage allowance is priced at R 494-00 when purchasing all components from Telkom. This is slightly more expensive than the R 458-00 for the Surfmore 30 Plus package, but allows for 3072 MB in comparison with ISDN’s 844 MB.

Isn't it 6GB now, rpm?

Hi 56kMan

R 245-00 for ADSL Access + R 249-00 for a 3 GB account (excluding the R 100-00 line rental). Many cheaper options of course...
3GB softcap. From what we get from the Telkom forumite, the softcap goes to 6GB for May.

Pabx

I think ISDN is basically only really useful when it comes to PABX systems.
Gives you a digital signal with 2 ports for the PABX to work through.

Only been a week since I installed a PABX system on my premises and so far so good. :)
Just frightfully expensive. :p

An ISDN2a line with Infinicall along with a VC 1/2GB package is also an option. You get 2 lines which is useful, during working hours, one could use the VC package for internet and after hours use the ISDN. For R243.58 (ISDN) + R265 (VC 1GB prepaid) = R508.58 you have an option that gives you 4GB per month, 2 telephone lines and better line reponse after hours on the ISDN then ADSL.

My PABX uses ISDN2.
No Analog ports. 2 Digital ports in other words.
The PABX system does the interpretation. Not 100% clued up how all this works yet, as I have only had the system a week.

E.g. You cannot plug an Analog phone into the ISDN Box.
It will only work from the PABX System.

bearing in mind you pay two calls, so R10x2 with infi call. o and 64kb so you can max of 7KB/s 420KB/m 25200/hour? 604800 in a day.in theory

Many ISDN subscribers do not trust the Surfmore packages to offer lower fees, but rather opt for Telkom’s InfinitCall product. For an additional monthly charge of R 67.18 per month there is a price cap of R 10.65 per call for after hour and weekend calls.
This does work if you can stay connected, i got mysteriously disconnected on weekends (when i was isdn).Telkom does this on purpose and at more regular intervals if you are on infinute call option

I've been told that the calls get dropped quite regularly so it is rare to manage to stay connected for a whole weekend. People I know who used InfinitCall told me they were charged the full price per call, no matter how long or short the call.

tns its R10 per call so for the 8kb maxthroughput it would be R10 per call i believe. R10 x 2 would be if you use both lines for a combined 16k/s 960k/m 57600/h or 1 382 400 k / day for R20 i can deal with that especially since telkom charges what? R70 or R80 per gig on adsl.

I may be wrong but thats the way i always understood isdn is that you have two lines and the choice of using either one or both. one line would therefore only incur a R10 charge. if you want the max you could possibly do its 57 600 / h * 60 hours is over 3 gigs per weekend for R20 so yeah i dont think isdn is gonna go away any time soon.

yes, but bare in mind if line 1 or 2 drops and redials you start again.so about after 4 redials you start loosing money

Infinitcall every night and every wekend gets me about 24gb's per month intl unshaped..for roughly R800-00.

Not bad for p2p compared to normal 56k dial-up cos on isdn 2 you get about 650mb a night downloaded....but lousy for streaming video, gaming etc.

ISDN Growing...obviously!

Regarding a comment in this article about ISDN growing in numbers. It is very obvious that this would be the case as ISDN is the enabler of DDI (direct inward dialing) on most PABX's today. PABX's use ISDN in a "digital voice" only format and in most cases the transfer of internet data or any other data for that matter is not a requirement or not the primary objective of ISDN in the PABX enviroment.

Another reason for the steady growth of ISDN is that many companies dont have just one line on their PABX. So when a company decide that they want direct inward dialling into their new PABX, it usually means converting multiple analogue lines to multiple ISDN lines....and that only for the fact that ISDN is an intelligent voice line that the PABX is able to understand and control.

Therefore, in my opinion, ISDN growth has nothing or very little to do with people requiring high speed data transfer, but rather to do with the constant growth in PABX technology and marketing.
