iSee little for now

My R750 camera can play back videos to me, and comes with a bit of software to convert other video formats to it's required format. Why do I need this R2500 thing?

You don't. Not in South Africa at least because we cannot utilize it's unique function, namely, being able to download from iTunes. I am sure you can tweak your network with a transparent proxy and make it work with a little effort, but then comes the bandwidth cost issues and blah, blah, blah.

This machine is beautiful. I can sell it to you, but can honestly show you much cheaper options to do what it does (except the iTunes functionality) better and cheaper!

Wait a second, including the iTunes functionality... ;)

Not quite sure what they were thinking launching it here - did they not even think about the lack of content??

I'll stick with my apple mini thanks. :)

With all the buzz about Ipods and this and that, I have silently in the background stuck with my ageing Hp Ipaq. It was the best investment I ever made. Its about 4 years old yet it still looks new.

Because it runs its own fully functional Operating System (windows Pocket PC / Windows Mobile) there a wealth of programs out there written by developers. I have downloaded tons of stuff for my Pocket PC, everything from games such as First person shooters and Flight Sims and even Strategy games. Then there are the multitudes of board games out there. For almost every purpose you could use a pocket pc for there is an app out there.

Its a truly versatile device with all the functionality defined by third party software. I can even skin it so the GUI looks like an iPod.

On the movie /music front, I have a 2gig card. I used to download videos off Youtube or copy movies and converted them to WMV. Now I play DivX as is using TCMPP(sic).

All in all it can do way more than an iPod and I even got a Garmin GPS add on to boot.

Long before iPod videos players and all that jazz I was showing people what a pocket pc can do to their disbelief. Now that it has aged everything else is trying to catchup, but my Pocket PC even continues to amaze me.

So I won't buy an iPod unless I got the money to waste. Its all marketing hype to me. Pocket PC FTW

You want to compare a mp3 player with a Pocket PC? A more apt comparison might be comparing your "ageing Hp Ipaq" with the iPhone. ;)

lol... :D

Sucks to the maximum that there is no iTunes here in SA, but some places sell the Gift cards would they work here?

Yes - they should work just fine here. :)

Plus, it does have a USB port, but ha ha ha, this is not for your iPod

What kind of effing journalistic writing is this!? Strikes me as having been written by a 12 year old while IM'ing his buddy.

It's much easier to buy a BluRay drive (I know they're a bit pricey but BD-ROMs are coming and a cheaper), or use a DVD-drive and rip DVD's/BD's/HDDVDs to DivX,Xvid or
H246 files and play those back. Yes it's possible to RIP HD-DVD or BDs.

Have not yet figured out why I need to buy anything made by Apple :D

Hyped up expensive crap seems to me.

The last Apple device I ever used was a macintosh in 1987.

Just like good old SA...you can buy the car but you can't get the fuel....you can buy the rims but you can't buy the tyres...you can get the internet but you can't afford the bandwidth....you can buy the Apple TV but you can't....you get the picture!

I've come to the conclusion that Apple can't sell anything in SA that they don't market here. Capisce.

Not sure I understand - Apple doesn't market anything in SA - that's all Core - an independent reseller.

Yes but Core is the exclusive Apple reseller here. They are the primary reseller and cut a deal with Apple to get a wholesale discount on their products to resell to people here at profit. Apple gives them products to
sell to us, instead of refusing to give them say Apple TV. Then they did refuse to give the the iPhones.

PeterCH : If Core were a CellPhone provider then apple would have cut a deal...

the iPhone is not sold in a traditional apple way... apple partners with a provider, and takes a cut of the contract value....
Core will never see a cent of any iPhone sold in this country.

Off the top of my head Project 3 is an authorised reseller as are Digicape and EC Mac.

WRT the phone - they also need an obliging cellular partner.

They market and sell through core among others. Bottom line is (and who can blame them) they prolly find it too tiresome to setup shop here.
