Hi Guys

My 20mbps line is with Cybersmart for R499 at the moment, and Data package is with Openweb.

I see Afrihost offers cheaper 20mbps for R425 and wooping 40mbps at only R535!

I want to move to Afrihost for their 40mbps upgrade which is just R36 more for what I'm paying for half the speed.

Cybersmart needs 1 month notice of cancellation. And was told that I need to first move my line back to Telkom before Afrihost can take over.

So, what I wanted to know is, where should I start? Today is 26th of May. If I cancel Cybersmart with a months notice, will Cybersmart ONLY move my line to Telkom on the 26th of June?

And how will I know if the line is with Telkom?

Do I only require to sign up with Afrihost on the 26th of June to take over?

and lastly, will afrihost "Know" when Cybersmart move the line to Telkom?

I hope you guys understand my question.

Hi, I went through the process when I moved my line to Afrihost. You should get an SMS when the line has been moved to Telkom, after which you will have to apply for the line migration with Afrihost. They will not know when the line is available for migration automatically.

HTH

Edit: This was for an ADSL line, but I'm sure the same rules apply

This clears things up a lot, and I take when Afrihost takes over, they charge Prorata for the rest of the month?

Much easier for me to just leave my line with Telkom. That way I can change ISPs when I want to without hassle

Its true, but the thing is I was with Cybersmart when I was able to sign my own contract etc, and they were at the time one of the top ISP for price and package for their uncapped.

But not anymore, I moved to Capped unshaped for full line speed.

Anyways, Telkoms 20Mbps is R499 while Afrihost is R425...lol, I go where it is cheaper, and since Afrihost is a reputable ISP, I believe the service must be good as well.

Sorry to hijack.

I am moving my ADSL to VDSL. Line and Data is with AH. Phoned Telkom who confirmed that I have VDSL available in my area, so immediately asked them to activate.

Problem:
They can't because I am with AH.

Phone AH - please move my line to VDSL.

Problem:
They don't have access to the MSAN to move my line. I need to phone Telkom.

Solution:
Cancel line with AH - waiting for 30-06 to have line moved back to Telkom. Then have to phone Telkom to move it to VDSL. Sign up for Data package (probably going AH) and then get VDSL router in order to free the internet.

So, my question. Once I phone Telkom on the 30th to move it to VDSL, how long does that process take? And, will I be internetlessness for any period of time?

This is weird, if your package and line is with Afrihost, then you should contact AH for everything related.

Ask Afrihost to upgrade you to either 20Mbps or 40Mbps line, they will deal with Telkom. Ah should be the one to request and upgrade on behalf of their client.

I don't think "move" line is the correct wording, it more like an upgrade.

Exactly what I did. AH said they can't help and I need to move the management of my line back to TK in order for them to upgrade/move or whatever the line to VDSL. Maybe Afriman could help here?

It's definitely correct that the line must move back to Telkom before it can be managed by another ISP (other than Telkom). Line transfers take a few working days to effect, so I would not worry about coinciding with month end so much, it never really ends up being that neat and tidy, but ultimately you never get billed for the same service period by Telkom or the ISP so there is no danger of that.

I can't speak for other ISPs but we usually SMS clients when we have completed their line migration, which is certainly the case when you migrate in. Worst case, you can PM me and I'll check on Telkom's portal if the line is eligible to transfer, which will mean it has moved over to Telkom.

It's a little unfair on Telkom's side here. We generally are not able to request transfer from one exchange to another unless there are extreme circumstances. My understanding of Telkom's VDSL policy is that you can get VDSL if you are already on an exchange that is VDSL ready, and Telkom don't move you to new exchanges to get the service. It's a little naughty if they are promising to do this if you move your line back, but then won't do it for ISPs.

I got your PM on this, let me dig a little into this before you make any changes :(

Hi guys

I'm also having trouble with Afrihost.
I was with Cybersmart with the line upgrade from 10Mbps to 20Mbps VDSL.

The reason I changed ISP is because I see Afrihost offers cheaper DSL Line prices.

After a months notice with Cybersmart to move my line back to Telkom so AH can take over, today was the day, I signed up with AH and everything was quick and easy, application was completed painlessly....now the big problem is, I have absolutely no connection, no matter what I do on my side, I changed settings, hard reset the router, used different account to connect and lastly I waited patiently for the line to get back in action. And guess what, for the whole day I had no connection whatsoever.

I'm on 20Mbps VDSL, from what I know you need a VDSL capable router and it will automatically connect you to PTM interface. But when I asked AH what's going on with my line, they say they not sure, and will have to log a fault with Telkom to check what is happening, and might take 2~3days to get back to me.
So now I will have no connection for that period.

And also asked me why am I using PTM interface. Really? If I don't use PTM I can't get 20Mbps VDSL speed, and my connection will be unstable from ATM ADSL2+ router nor can I get the proper 20Mbps if I'm not on PTM.

Please tell me what is happening, I need my internet and WiFi for work....if this can't be sorted this week, I'm leaving AH for sure.

Wat

Did you have 20Mbs VDSL with Cybersmart or did you upgrade to it when you moved to Afrihost

Hi

Sorry if I didn't explain it properly.

I was already on 20Mbps Vdsl with Cybersmart, I decided to move to AH because of their price, I all I did today was order their 20Mbps VDSL line only and it came with 1GB free account.
But once the application was complete I couldn't connect to the internet.

OMG....I wonder if the ISP know about this....

So now I'm stuck in the mud and can't really do anything until ISP is sorted on their side??

Thanks for the info

ISPs know about this. Especially Afrihost, their staff however, might not be too clued up.

I don't know about any actions you can take as I've had no experience with this. It's a very new thing they implemented.

^^^^^ all this is the reason why my line stays with Telkom . I can pick up and leave without worrying how good my next ISP will be in handling my line. What use is it if an ISP can't manage everything about your line ? Now you have to go thru the trouble of switching back to TK, wait for the upgrade to VDSL and then switch back, including probably being down during the switch over

Damn, maybe it not too late for me to switch back to Telkom from Afrihost....but I think they already deducted my money for the month.

Guess I can only wait now, the new policy somehow purposely want customers to stay with Telkom to avoid all this hassle.
