Ok so the thread title sums it up.

I need recommendations and info about the FUP of different ISPS.

I am currently on MWEB standard uncapped 6 mbps that has FUP of 150 GB (paying R359 p/m). Been streaming and downloading a lot so I calculated I will need about 250 GB / month. Most of the usage (mainly streaming) will be in normal hours (8 am - 11 pm)
So I was looking to go to MWEB 10 mbps standard package which will give me FUP of 250 GB I need, but this will cost me R539 p/m

Mweb has been giving me great latency / rarely any buffering with international streaming but I thought I should "feel around a bit" before going for their 10 mbps plan...so any comments on other isps? Maybe like Webafrica 10mbps home uncapped @ R499 p/m? What is their FUP? And if you recommend another ISP, please state their FUP before you get throttled and cannot stream properly anymore?

Also never had capped before, so if there is a package that will give me 250 gigs without throttling at a good price I might also consider it

Ok looks good but their 10 mbps option (R799) is above my budget. MWeb will give me 250 GB @ 10mbps for R539. Also, crystal web dont seem to have a 6 Mbps uncapped?
Or even capped options? Could not find it on their website

And by the way, what is the FUPs of crystal web?

Try their online chat on their web site. They might be able to assist and give you pricing.

Most other ISPs try get you to download at midnight for their home accounts. For example for the usage you wanna do you'd need a Business account from Web Africa.

Either way you will end up spending up more and for just doing what you want, when you want MWEB is actually good.

I say just upgrade your MWEB account.

What speed does your line actually sync at? if you only have a 6Meg line why not just get 6Meg premium? That has a FUP of 600GBs.

My line sync at 10 mpbs, but currently im using a 6 mbps account which is fast enough for me. Even the 6meg premium account @ R699 is above my budget though. The 10 mbps standard (R539) will suit me the best it seems cause it gives me 250 GB and speed is good and unthrottled ALL DAY long...

As much as it pains me to recommend them, Telkom Internet is actually quite good. Next best I would say is any IS based account (not the cheap uncapped ones though). IS sometimes has better international latency though but I'm finding TI very reliable.

Care to share pricing and FUP of telkom? Also remember I need good latency / no throttling during office hours..

Well did an email enquiry - they start throttling at 200 GB during office hours and are more expensive than mweb @ R539 (which gives me 250 GB unthrottled) - extract of email reply:

Our 10Mbps uncapped accounts are provisioned as standard with up to 200GB of Tier 1 data (the highest priority data on all protocols). Thereafter we shape large download protocols, and release this shaping from midnight onwards. This means that gaming, streaming, browsing, VPN and other traffic always remains untouched, and you get to experience priority Tier 1 bandwidth without active shaping being applied as well. It's true uncapped bliss for R799 per month

Or alternatively you could opt for our 200GB capped package for R 549.00

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

Warm Regards

Nowhere there does it say they throttle.

Hi there,

We do not throttle accounts at all. We offer free tier 1 unshaped data up to 200 gigs which is unshaped, and thereafter shape downloads only - never streaming. Currently there is a network fault which is resulting in downloads not receiving full throughput but this is abnormal and being fixed as we speak.

The throttling limits you see from other ISPs are where they throttle your line speed down or deprioritise it heavily. We don't follow that methodology. We simply shape downloads after your tier 1 allocation is used.

Ok so throttling is the wrong word used by me - I meant throttling and / or shaping.

Well mweb doesnt throttle or shape me any time of day before reaching 250 GB, so still a better option

And even with the 50 GB extra they are still cheaper

You may want to double check that. ;)

Well I dont do p2p, all other protocols I have used during office hours in the last 2 years i've been with them has given me full speed during the day before reaching my 250 GB

edit: just tested my mweb acc with NNTP and getting 4mbps of 6mbps (account limit) down - not bad for office hours

Afternoon enerdude, I've been keeping an eye on this thread ;)

Looking at the type of traffic you move, any of our packages would suit your needs. Streaming is prioritised, therefore your experience has been sublime :)

Let me know when you would like to move to the 10Mbps package, I can arrange it happen: just like that :D

Hey! Any chance you can be a little more specific about your shaping? I do daily backups over an OpenVPN connection that usually start between 05h00 and 07h00, rate limited to about 600KB/s - Daily transfers can be between 3 and 8 GB, sometimes up to 12GB. I need this to work well even if I happen to have broken the 200gb "tier 1" data limit.
