I just registered a few trial account alongside my existing accounts to test speeds. I used the mybroadband speed test for all tests. Here are the results on my 2MB line:

Axxess 50GB capped account:

SA:

Download Speed: 1563 kbps (195.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 421 kbps (52.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 39 ms

Int:

Download Speed: 1230 kbps (153.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 401 kbps (50.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 221 ms

WebAfrica 5GB Capped Trial Account

SA:

Download Speed: 1658 kbps (207.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 420 kbps (52.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 40 ms

Int:

Download Speed: 826 kbps (103.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 402 kbps (50.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 205 ms

Imaginet Uncapped Trial Account:

Well the Imaginet trial account simply didn't work. It couldn't connect. The one time that my modem did synchronise with the account details there was no connection, although the router indicated that it was connected. Tried 6 times to no avail.

MWEB Uncapped Trial Account:

SA:

Download Speed: 1394 kbps (174.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 419 kbps (52.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 41 ms

Int:

Download Speed: 894 kbps (111.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 391 kbps (48.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 210 ms

All tests were conducted over the course of about 10 minutes so should be a fair comparison.

I wanted to test Afrihost, Openweb & Plugg as well, however trial accounts were not readily available for testing. I am sure that they will all provide trial accounts if you request them (as they have on the forums), but I was looking for products that don't require me to call them up and wait for approval. Axxess also provide a trial account but I figured that wasn't necessary as I have an existing account with them.

Not sure if this is of relevance to anyone but I thought I'd share my results for others...

Decided to purchase an Axxess uncapped account. Here are the results:

Axxess uncapped 2MB @ R296pm (pro-rata to R160 for this month):

SA:

Download Speed: 1723 kbps (215.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 425 kbps (53.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 39 ms

Int:

Download Speed: 1326 kbps (165.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 400 kbps (50 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 228 ms

All in all, Axxess' uncapped account appears to be better than all of the others, even WebAfrica's capped account that I just tested, which couldn't crack 100kbps just 5 minutes ago...

You kinda need to indicate your ISP and package* to be of any relevance to anyone...

*No, not that one...

Hmmm... I get 111 KB/sec on my 1Mb line (OpenWeb GOLD Uncapped)
And I don't mean "Top Speed" on a speedtest either, this is the speed I get all day, every day. (International)

Just seems like a waste to pay for a 2Mb ADSL Line AND a 2Mb Uncapped Package when you only get speeds comparable to 1Mb :erm:

You should definitely try OpenWeb, don't settle for these other ISPs DJ...

Well I;ve got nothing to complain about when it comes to Axxess. They've been great so far on capped and I've noticed no difference at all since moving to uncapped. Their support (apart from once), been top-notch.

I know that they're owned by Afrihost and obviously run on the same network, but I don't have any complaints..yet.

This is why I was harsh on them last month wrt their stupid competition, but Gian's responses gave me confidence. Their recent downtime didn't impact me, so let's hope it is the last of that nonsense...

Repeat after me "There are no problems with the MTN Networkm it is Telkom's fault"

Interesting. I've had near full line speed on my 2MB account with Axxess. Will the 10MB differ to the 2MB? Surely if there's a problem with the network, it would affect all uncapped accounts equally? Or am I being naive here?

Have to admit I was being sarcastic, it is something specific it seems like to the Cape Town area. After dark the MTN network ISPs (Afrihost and Axxess specifically) just goes to rubbish, and you don't get anything. The standard response from them is it is a Telkom problem.
