Hi

Has anyone here heard of this wisp. I live in Westville, Durban and they recently sent out flyers advertising R245 uncapped on a month to month basis. It sounded quite attractive but I wanted to first check if anyone has used them.

If anyone has, can you tell me:
1. How reliable is the service?
2. How good is the speed (they claim up to 512k)?
3. What's their uptime like, i.e. is it really 'always connected'?
4. Does bad weather severely affect the signal?

Any replies would be most appreciated.

I would suggest that you search the Wifi and Wisp forums for the word wisp. Read the results, and then give serious consideration to what you are asking!

If I were you, and if possible, ADSL would be a much wiser investment in the long run!

They should really change the laws revolving the 2.4 and 5.8 spectrum. State something like "Can only be used by non-commercial entities or entities receiving no gain on services offered on the spectrum".

Cos really these wisps are popping up by the hundreds and its really starting to screw with my once very good connection.

Already searched the forum. There were no answers except for the usual disappointment with wisps. There wasn't anything specific about ispot. For me it's either adsl or this. The other wireless SP's have poor signal near me.

I think you may have found that elusive answer after all!

ADSL is the way to go, esp with being handed a free router, there is actually no investment needed, if the WISP hands out a free Wireless, then you could consider it; I doubt it though.

Due to my association with Jawug, I eat, breathe, and live wireless - but I would NEVER recommend going with a wisp, as I am all too familiar with their tactics, and quality of service. If you are going to be spending money each month for internet, rather choose ADSL!

Rather get ADSL, and join DWC if you want to see how wireless is supposed to be done :)

you get what you pay for

Think about it. you really think you going to get a great service for that price.

at the end of the day you get what you pay for.
I hope ispot has moved their backbone links off 2.4Ghz but how much profit can they be making at R245 to upgrade their network.

Im guessing its another one of those "we have 1 x 1024k uncapped IS line" WISP's who are using a 20:1 contention ratio, hence the up to 512k connection. Im guessing you will seldom if ever get that.
Its all an easy way to turn a quick profit and become another *fly by night WISP* here today gone tomorrow.
Do everyone who has some passion for wireless a favour and get ADSL!

Spoken like a true Wugger!

I'm just wandering what all this *fly by night WISP* do with there old equipment?

It gets returned to a certain vendor... and melted to help in the production of more powerful amps for new fly by nights.
