Ja sure, and let me guess you're downloading Linux distros only... Please do tell us what "legal" content this is you are downloading.

Practically everything from demo's to FREE music to linux distros, patches, updates, drivers, anything that is legal... you think I'd stuff around with TOS violations on a production webserver? I've been in contact with the hosting provider and they reckon its ok since my account is set for unlimited bandwidth and the content I'm downloading is regarded as either Opensource or legal download.

I actually have a close friend who emigrated to China. You cannot compare our freedoms or lack thereof with the kinds of freedoms the Chinese enjoy. Have you actually been to China?

A bit hostile hmm?:(

Just some examples of China's continued efforts to limit their population's access to the Internet... And that is the comparison I was attempting to make before you got a bug up your behind... and besides who the hell emigrates to china anyway??? Its like going on holiday to Sudan! :p

I know there are some legal uses, but honestly most things are illegal. And most people use P2P solely for illegal downloads.

Most of the things you mention are far better to download for free right off http at full speed with no upload. All of those things would be hosted on web servers if they are free, just some arb music that might not be..

Oh I don't doubt most downloading going on is illegal but the reason I use my UK webserver (besides the speed) is so that I have a backup of all the downloads and torrents are pretty expensive when it comes to bandwidth. A 100MB download could cost you 300MB easy. I get the torrent on the server and then download it onto my PC so 100MB costs 100MB.

This directly from my UK ISP:
You are free to do with your server as you wish so long as it is nothing
illegal.

Kind regards,

David Haskett

Jtech it is none of Ibursts business what we are downloading
True... if you read what I was driving at, then you wouldn't point a finger now would you... I don't give a flying **** what iBurst thinks, except to say that for the JHB region torrents don't work and I have my suspicions it was done on purpose to allow more signups whilst stalling the spend on more bandwidth.

Have a look what Shireen has to say about P2P in the iBurst blog, even though she denies that it is been blocked.

Well what she has to say is fine, but it is obvious from what people here are saying that there is a problem. She is handling it like a general query about P2P shaping..

Someone really needs to drop them a email or (more clear) comment demanding some sort of action if they want their P2P back.

Well, actually a lot of people have demanded action. iBurst does not respond to demands for action, you should know that by now. Dealing with iBurst is like dealing with any useless govt department- inefficient, and you have to beg to get anything out of them.

p2p was always a joke when shaped so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I am just interested in getting my VPN back, because for me, that bypasses all these problems and I don't have to battle with iBurst at all!

Has anybody else noticed an improvement in web browsing/web downloading speeds since this torrent/p2p problem has surfaced? I know I have.

Speeds

Nope, i still have VERY bad speeds, i was getting 0.9kb/s this morning, what a nice weekend i have installed, watching slow downloads..

Yes I have... my pings are EXCELLENT. From a 128k Diginet to my iBurst I can maintain 83mS pings and the response of the boxes on the iBurst are really phenomenal. Normal HTTP and stuff like that is really good, on speed tests I get the full rated speed, most of the time now. That's why I say they've blocked p2p on purpose to either stabilize the network or to make more bandwidth availiable to cater for more sign-ups without capital outlay i.e. bigger inet pipe. The well-worn trick used by the cellular operators.

The danger of this is of course that they will continue on this trend and in the future iBurst will probably end up becoming slower than dial-up, even with plain vanilla HTTP traffic.

Worst thing is the hairy bastards are now blocking/not approving my new comments that link to this thread....

*sigh*

but this is crazy, if i had known this i would never of signed up with iburst, even telskum gives me more pleasure.

I've noticed of late that it seems without fail I am downloading at full speed all the time in the evenings. That would make sense.

Are you in jhb or pta? was ur downloads ok last night cos mine sucked bad and im in pta

hahaha, i wonder what they mean by problems...or even better when they planning on fixing these "problems"...

Unfortunately you got in late. We used to be able to d/l (albeit slowly) without unshaping the line with a VPN service. The VPN service kicked the bucket and we all thought we'd be OK.... NOT! Torrents don't work at all now and so officially I am fscked, all I can download is stuff on HTTP. If I need something urgently from p2p I fire up Tor and Privoxy which is slow and resource hungry.
