Israeli Election

From CNN

The campaign was dominated by the recent war with Palestinian militants in Gaza, which was popular within Israel despite widespread international condemnation. Netanyahu was a harsh critic of Kadima founder Ariel Sharon's 2005 withdrawal of Israeli troops and settlers from Gaza, and his supporters say he has been proven right.

Seems like Hamas did the right wing in Israel a big favour.

I dunno.. news article on news24 says its tied up still.. something i find interesting is this, democracy isn't the same everywhere. In the sense that what determines who wins the elections seems the vary all over the world, e.g. the US system vs SA vs Zim(lol, well the part where u get a run off wtf??) vs Israeli one.. Anyone want to explain to how this works? And whats the SA version??

Likud was forecast to win 27 -- a dramatic jump from its current 12.

Seem to me the right-wing has gain a lot.

Thanks to Hamas!

Kadima won the most votes, but it seems that likud is likely to lead a government (through Netenyahu) because the right wing parties hold the majority in parliment/ the knesset.

Having one seat more than the opposition is hardly a heavy defeat.

Regardless of which group takes control nothing much is going to change for either the Palestinians or the Israelis.

The world is watching them both.

Conceded - but compared to Netanyahu and his far-rightists they may well be considered left wing.

There's a party even further to the right who will now have a big say in the new government. Can't recall their name :p

Unless they are going to fund and provide Israels arms supply, they will still have to do what Obama says - which is why I expect nothing much to change on either side.

I think Israel will be even less tolerant of Hamas. The West Bank might be better off, but I think Gaza is in for a bumpy ride.

It will be interesting to see what happens. He is after all a populist and a major conflict with Hamas and Iran will seriously damage what he treasures most, his PR. Especially amoung his core supporters will turn on him like hell hath no fury . He'll be more than willing to sell out Israel to protect his PR. He sold out his own country in the war in Iraq (not to mention Iraqis themselves) for political gain so why not do the same to Israel

Didnt know we were discussing Hamas and Hezbollah

No I was refering to the muderous and genocidal israelis who seem to think they can invade and target a democratically elected government

So much for the will of the people.
