Twice I've done all the necessary steps and after a few hours the number went back to the MTN network. Apparently MTN is having technical difficulties in releasing the number. What now?

everytime i call a friend of mine who ported to Cell C from MTN and he is out of network coverage i get the following voice message: "this number is not longer registered on the MTN network"
so his Cell C voicemail is non-existant due to MTN not releasing the number fully...
so know you are not alone in this issue....

This is not good I am due to port from MTN to Cell C on the 19th.

I have been advised that I should first port from MTN contract to MTN prepaid, and then to Cell C prepaid.

Lets hope my story is a better one.

Best way to do this:
- Phone MTN (808) and then ask to migrate your number to prepaid. Make sure that they understand this and make sure that they DO NOT CANCEL your number
- In my case it took 48 hours, and other people it varied between 24-72 hours. You will receive a welcome message from MTN
- Once on prepaid, go to a CellC shop (don't use the call-centre or online, or port via SMS, this does not work) - ask for a port (remember RICA docs for the new SIM)
- Wait until your MTN signal is gone and your SIM is deactivated (can take another 48-72 hours). CellC is quite good there, and during delays have actually phoned
- Once the MTN signal is off, pop in your CellC SIM and you are good to go

In all instances where there were issues, it was related to MTN not releasing the MSISDN.

I ported from MTN to CellC in July, and had issues with MTN not releasing my number. I had given MTN 30 days notice and migrated my number to prepaid.

When CellC submitted the port request it was declined by MTN twice. When I went to the MTN office and ranted at them, they told me that the port request must be submitted as *post-paid*.

That sorted out the porting issue. They never stopped invoicing me though. I'm currently trying to get refunded for money they took a month AFTER I'd ported :-(

Thank you for the replies. This is not what I wanted to hear :( I have phoned MTN (managed to get to some chap after lots of tries and patience) and instead of helping me he tried to sell me a "better" deal. This is what I get after almost 10 years of MTN loyalty. I will take your advice and do it the long way. (Change to pre-paid first) Now I am totally put OFF MTN :(
