my old 40gb hard drive is about to fail so i need to setup Xp on a seperate hd.
ok so i did do some googling about this and i see Windows Xp cant read further than 131 gigs or something like that :p

This is what i want to basically do : setup 2 partitions ,1 is about 20 gigs for the Install and the rest for data etc. Now i did the partitioning successfully and when i booted off the Xp cd it only sees the hd as a 131 gig drive and doesnt see the 2 partitions i created.im using the old XP service pack 1 disc we got with the pc.Will a later version of Xp recognise the bigger drive?

Is there something simple i can do?
Also if i created another partition is it possible to have Xp on the 20 gig partition,Windows 7 on a say 40 gig and the last partition for data?
I got this beta of Windows 7 id like to try before purchasing a copy.

any help .thanks !

Thats weird, my 320GB hdd is seen by XP, the whole thing!

I install using a 32bit XP sp2 CD. Doubt its the service pack, maybe your hdd or perhaps your mobo? Are you formatting in NTFS like one should?

yeah i formatted both partitions NTFS.well im thinking it could be my ancient Xp because you say your Xp with SP2 recognises it? everytime i used to format the 40 gb hd i would ALWAYS have to install SP2 before windows would see my slave 250 gig so im thinking that could definetely have something to do with it.I seriously think the Xp disc i have is one of the first pro versions.

Yes. SP2 and 3 support larger disks. You could try slipstreaming SP3 into your current SP1 disc, which will save you the effort of installing that later.

I'm sure that will work. Just remember that copying from the data partition to either Windows 7 or Windows XP will be a bit slower, since all the partitions are on the same disk. Put your primary OS on the first partition, if possible, to increase its performance.

Ok thanks man - i thought it could have something to do with this. will try and get a newer version of Xp

Right click on My computer. Select manage, under storage, select disk management. Select the new partitions and initialize and format.

Download SP3 for XP, and then download nlite (www.nliteos.com), and use that to slipstream the service pack and create a new disk....

i'll make u a disk:)
