Hi guys,

I am having some issues with my network at home. I have 3 machines, called: my machine, dad's machine, and HTPC. All these computers are connected to a Billion ADSL router (4 ethernet ports) via ethernet (non of this WiFi c@rp). All computers are connected using their onboard NICs.

My computer and the HTPC are running vista ultimate, and my dad's is running XP pro. All IP addresses are assigned using DHCP by the Billion router.

The issue I am having is as follows: When attempting to move large amounts of data (for instance stream videos from my machine to the HTPC) the connection cuts out for a short while (not noticeable) which obviously causes the app playing the file to crash. Initially, I thought that it was just a streaming problem, but then I tried to just copy the files over to the HTPC. This didnt work either, as it just cut out mid way, and said something to the extent of: the file can not be accessed. I have tried both pulling the file from my machine (copy operation initialized on HTPC) and pushing the file to the HTPC (copy operation initialized on my PC). Neither worked.

Copying the same files from my machine to my dads (1.5GB) works flawlessly. Copying from my dads machine to the HTPC also works perfectly. Copying from the HTPC to my machine also works without any issues. The only time I have problems is copying from my PC to the HTPC

I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do about this problem now. I cant detect a fault anywhere, since all of them seem to be communicating with each other perfectly.

Also, If I ping the HTPC from my machine while copying or streaming, things seem to be a lot more stable and consistent.

Any suggestions that I can try out? An idea I just had now, is that this is an IPv6 issue, since when pinging the HTPC by name, it pings the IPv6 address, and not the IPv4 address.

I gather the problem lies when copying between your machine and the HTPC, no matter which direction.

Kill IPv6. Your dad's machine is XP, so no IPv6 support there; works.

hhhm, ok seems to have helped... the transfers are still not 100% perfect (at least when comparing DU meter graphs with transfers from my PC to Dads, as well as HTPC to my machine, but as long as it works, i think I will be streaming most of the time, so speed is not really an issue.

Any case, thanks for the suggestions. If anybody has any other ideas, feel free to give me a shout.

Do you have SP1 installed on the vista machines?

Yup, got SP1 on both machines installed... thing is I was suspecting that a good system reinstall is in order on my machine. Been goin for a year now, so maybe it is time. The HTPC is a relatively fresh install, so shouldnt be an issue there.
