Hi everyone.

Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question but here goes.

How does the Android device trade-in work at iStore?

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 and I have realised I am basic candybar form-factor kind of guy. I bought the phone seeking a new experience and have not been enjoying it like I thought I would. You live and you learn...

I can either trade-in for a Samsung Galaxy S23 device and get a guaranteed R10,000 for the purchase or I can try an iPhone with their trade-in deal.

Can anyone advise how the process works and how much I am likely to get?

I think there's an estimator on the iStore website, isn't there?

Be prepared for disappointment though. I tried a few months ago and they wanted to offer me about R3000 for my S21FE. Which was only a few months old. Not that I was intending to switch anyway, just curious. But I definitely didn't switch after that.

There is a list of only a few devices on the website, which seems out of date and is also not guaranteed ("up to...").

I'm also curious. I want to try something new but also want it to be worthwhile and not feel shortchanged. Like you mention, I'm preparing to be disappointed. I guess Samsung's R10,000 deals have spoiled a lot of people.

Probably best to visit an iStore with your Samsung device and receipts and ask. I think they operate an appointment system, so best to phone first.

Apple wants to protect the premium-ness of their brand.
I found this video quite informative:
Fascinating video. I have always admired their business strategy, mostly for the reasons he mentions.

Yep, I'll probably do that.

I mean I don't know whether I'd say I admire it, but there's no denying that it's effective.

Have you used Apple devices before? I know there are some on this forum who would crucify me but I get really annoyed when I try to use them. (Android devices annoy me to but slightly less.)

Their strategy has been very effective.

I haven't used an iPhone before but do have an iPad. I'm not sure how I will adapt if I decide to make the switch. I've been using Samsung for about 6 years now.

I bought the Z Flip4 because I wanted something new and different. At that time, I did consider an iPhone but decided against it because Samsung and other retailers were offering R10,000 for my (then) 3 year old S10+. It was a great deal.

In the end, you will get the biggest bang for your buck (and also for camera quality) if you go for trading it in for the S23 instead of any iPhone.

Then use the ten grand you saved and get a used iPhone 11 Pro, for example? (As you know, Apple products receive updates for years and years, and this way you will have an Apple device to trade in for a newer Apple device, instead of trying to get them to give you a good trade-in deal on an ANDROID device ...

Why would you then get a used iphone if you already have an S23? Just for the trade-in?

I'm fairly sure that buying a used iphone just for the trade-in value won't work out economically - just buy the new iPhone cash if you really want it.

That is an interesting option.

Okay, so I'm seriously considering the switch. It is just a matter of me going into the store again and doing the transaction.

Has anyone here switched from Android to iPhone?
What was your experience like?
Was it easy to adapt?
Any advice for a newbie who has been using Android almost 7 years?

Some things I have read online about which I would appreciate some feedback:

(Please forgive me if some seem trivial or insignificant, I just want to get a better sense of daily user-friendliness)

1. Is it true that iPhone doesn't have a clipboard with all recently copied items for easy pasting?
2. Can you keep frequently used phrases, etc in a clipboard to use whenever you need it?
3. Is it true that the calculator doesn't have a history view and selection function?
4. Is it true that you cannot use apps in split screen view, ie. 2 apps open at the same time sharing the screen like Notes and the calculator to run some calculations?
5. Can you use other apps and do other things while on a WhatsApp video call with someone and keep them in a picture-in-picture pop-up?
6. Is there a way to keep the call log solely for network calls and not include calls made through other app?
7. Will an iPhone 13 be compatible with the existing Samsung Trio Wireless charger I already have?

Has anyone here switched from Android to iPhone?
A few - and we all have different experiences, based on what we did with Android . I love the photography side and was a bit annoyed with a few things :

- Photos app automatically sorts photos old > new and you can’t change this - unless you create a photo album . That’s strange enough but then in 3rd party apps (ie Mail) when you add a photo, it opens new > old.

- Again a photo thing, but no manual mode on the iPhone. You can’t change any settings you want. In used to enjoy aperture mode - but nothing similar on my iPhone

- I found the share sheet limited or non existent. In other words, when you go to the Photo app and share to Instagram - it’ll bypass all editing . You may as well just go to the app and open the photo. The editing app I used to use (Snapseed) isn’t even available to share.

- I found some apps (generally the local) worse or limited features on iOS. 22Seven, Childcloud, Private Property, Snapseed all work better on Android .

- I don’t find it as stable as people say - I rebooted twice yesterday as iMessage glitches and Layout gave me seemed to glitch. I’ve had a few errors on WhatsApp with uploading status or sending voice notes where a screen came up and asked to reboot. On the odd occasion YouTube displayed a blank video (sound and preview works - just the video didn’t).

- WhatApp history could be an issue to transfer from Android to iOS. I just couldn’t be bothered and started fresh.

- I do wish there was a separate app for SMS rather than iMessage. It just clogs up with texts. That said, yesterday I chose to keep 30 days so maybe that will help

- You have 40w charging or something? That may or may not be something you need to get used to. I had it for 4.5 years and dropping to 20w made me a bit more conscious. I know that I can’t plug in 20 minutes before loadshedding and get enough power to get through.

So those are my issues - but overall, everything works as it should and I’ll buy another iPhone. But I’ll wait until usb c

Thank you for this @Dolby!

Just sell the Samsung privately and use the cash towards an iPhone, you will still take a huge loss though. Don't buy an S23, two wrongs don't make a right. It would be like trading in a Haval for a Chery. Both are still the same crap. Get an iphone and live in Bliss.
