Strange how when new stock is due, core is able sell their remaining stock at price levels that are more inline with other international ones.

You won't find a 27 inch S-IPS in SA. The best and better than Apple Cinema Display is a 30 inch S-IPS Dell - it's not glossy and I prefer it that way, glossy screens suck. I have a 30 inch Dell connected to my Mac Pro.

To each it's own, I guess. It's really all relative, I happen to love the glossy 27" screen and sulk when I have to work on a matte one.
I too prefer glossy...
General consumer monitors like Dell, HP, etc... are not in my experience up to par when considering the correctness of the colour; for gamers I guess this doesn't matter.
Alternatives to Apple's displays that I prefer are:
NEC, ViewSonic - Cost effective without sacrificing too much on quality
However if cost is not a problem and quality is preferred, then you can't go wrong with one of the Eizo Coloredge displays.
It helps if you calibrate them. I suspect with apple they come pre-calibrated maybe.
If you still believe apple is god (they don't even make the panels, they get them from the same places as everyone else) and nobody can make a display like them then go buy apple. The 27" display will be out next month.

It's taken for granted that you would need to calibrate the display, however if you do a little research you will realise that not all panels are equal from a hardware perspective (e.g. significant gamut differences, panels with and without IPS, ...); yes vendors source these panels from the same manufacturers, but what they request does differ. HP and Dell have tended towards the low to medium price market and hence have selected the panels that allow them to compete in this space.
Apple on the other hand; similarly NEC, Viewsonic, Eizo and others have chosen to compete in the mid to high band with higher quality panels.
The same difference can be found with LCD and LED tv brands.
As I said if you're only playing games, then I guess it doesn't really matter...

I think it's actually superior WRT gamut actually.
Must admit to avoiding the Dell monitors based on purely on past experience of poor quality, however it appears you are correct the 27" Ultrasharp is definitely comparable, and has received a number of excellent reviews.
The only negative point I see is that it also comes at a premium (Price range is between $999 to $1050) - at this price one could consider waiting for the Apple 27" LED Cinema Display at $999 (Aluminium vs Plastic; sorry to say but the Dell should be cheaper for this difference.)
In my case the iMac still for me represents the best merge of a group of high end technologies (enough power to be an alternative option to the Mac Pro, and a top quality screen that ranks well with the best).
There no doubt that one could find / build alternatives, and most likely even some at a better price, but unfortunately not many that are as simple and well designed as the mac. It would be nice if this was not the case.

The Dell Ultrasharp is not like the cheapies, it's pro quality. But of course yes the iMac is still great value if you look at the amazing screen that goes into it, a lot of people miss that. IPS!
FYI I placed an online order with Digicape the day after this post and was called back by one of their sales staff who committed to contact me as soon as they have stock.
Well guess what; I never got called by Digicape; but did get a call from a similar enquiry with Core. I received it about a week ago and it's exactly all I could hope for - super fast and well designed.

Yes it was.
Order was placed online and then followed up with a phone call (from jhb digicape) stating that I would be contacted when the product officially was available.... as I said the same request was placed (same day) on the iStore, difference is that I already have received my iMac from the iStore; and still have not received any call from digicape... Service is unfortunately not better...
