Hello hi

I was just wondering if anyone here knows what details you would need to take to an iStore in order to recieve the student discount?

Will a student card suffice or do you need a document that proves you study at a given institution or something? Tried searching but nothing terribly helpful came up.

Thanks :)

I suppose a student card would suffice but proof of registration will be better. There's also institution specific online stores, eg tuks.zastore.co.za

The iStore by me got stock in yesterday so i'm going to go later on to make a purchase, not really into ordering online and waiting when i can just drive over to the store and come home with the goods.
But ive seen someone post that all they took was a student card to a store in jhb / pta. But i think i saw someone say somewhere else that official documentation was required so just figuring out what exactly they require.

I'm in DBN by the way, (if that makes any difference.....), so if anyone's bought there on a student vibe recently then feel free to speak up
ha.

You need a student card and a letter from your varsity saying that you're registered and have been attending in 2010. They're quite sticky on the last part. It needs to be an official letter and not just a proof of registration.
Enjoy your new Mac!

Its 5% here.
Not that much but when you're buying a machine thats quite expensive its better than nothing i guess..

In the UK its 30%. My wife is distance studying through a UK varsity and just bought in Mac pro 13" 2.5ghz 250gb with parallels and snow leopard and magic mouse and int. warranty upgrade and case and monitor convertor etc. for 1100 quid...about R8000 cheaper than here. we are so ripped off!! we had a friend bring it over as carry on.

Core is not part of Apple. Countries like UK, USA, Japan have actual APPLE presence and Apple can give 30% discounts or so. In SA Core would have to ask Apple for discount and they don't seem to do that - the 5% is probably from their own pocket. It kind of tells you what Apple thinks of the Developing World - at least - Bill Gates donates tons of $$$ to HIV, malaria and other research while MS gives discounts to the developing world and educational institutions.

The reason why Apple products are so expensive in SA is because Steve Jobs wants them to be so.

it frustrate me so much to see that on average we are paying between 2300 to 4000 more on apple hardware here :( sigh

For anyone who is interested.... Core require a letter from your institution stating you are a student there, a student card and your ID book. Apparently the discount only applies to full time students as well.

Because Core has to pay for it out of their own pocket. If the discount is different than in UK/US where Apple has presence, Apple has to be the reason. If Apple gives 30% off in US/UK and nothing in SA, Core has to give 5% or nothing at all. Otherwise they would just get cheaper stock from Apple and pass the savings on.

I don't like Core but Apple is just as much to blame here, after all they should give big discounts to 3rd world countries. Can poor people in SA get a cheaper Mac? Can NGOs?

I say stuff Africa and the developing world. The first world got where they are, not through hand-outs...but through hard work and intuition. Africa is blessed with the best opportunities in the world - plenty natural recourses, tons of minerals, oil, and the finest agricultural land in the world. It is not devastated with natural disasters like the USA has to deal with hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and winters that keep the land unproductive under snow for half the year etc. Africa needs to help itself. Africa needs to wean itself off from the western world. How much longer is the west going to need to give food aid and help to Africa ? The more food it sends out here, the more Africa breeds, and so the following years there are even more mouths to feed. Africa needs to root out corruption, put good leaders in place.....because it has the resources for being the most powerful continent on earth, - although I doubt it would ever come to pass, owing to the performance attributes of it's inhabitants. How will Africa become self supporting with powerful economies if they know they can just get hand-outs all the time. They are, by nature, a lazy and unproductive society.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, keep your money. Rather use it in the USA to help your own people in times of need such as Hurricane Catrina, Hurricane Andrew etc. As long as you keep feeding the poor Africans, the more they will breed and not learn to stand on their own feet, but will keep the begging bowl outstretched.

Well corporate incentives like discounts for developing world and educational discounts actually pay off. 1. It makes the company look good - great publicity. 2. It introduces your product to new customers who will probably be full payment customers in the future. It's probably also a great tax write off for the company as well.

The problem is that educational discounts would be great here - sadly Apple sucks in that regard. BTW I'm not a student.
