Hey,

I have the problem with my Bakkie that it smokes heavily and it needs 2 be kick-started. The smoke never stops even after driving and in idling mode.

Glow plugs?

My ford ranger was doing something similar this winter , car just didn't want to start in the mornings and eventually when it does it was puffing out smoke like no tomorrow (it did however stop after i drove around a little). This got worse to a point where i simply could no longer start the car, battery and alternator fine.

So in the end, 3 of my 4 glow plugs were dead. I suppose even 1 dead glow plug can already show symptoms of struggling to start.

Glow plugs only play a role during startup though, so if it's a problem during the actual drive, then it is probably something else. Otherwise, maybe fuel injection / fuel pump problems combined with the cold? I usually get smoke due to the engine being cold.

Changed glow plugs,I skat it must be the fuel pump, but the smoke is snow white and according to my knowledge (not much) over fueling causes dark/black smoke

Here's nice summary of reading "smoke signals"

http://www.dieselsmoke.com.au/
White smoke occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include…
Faulty or damaged injectors
Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)

Black smoke is the most common smoke emitted from diesel engines. It indicates poor and incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel. There are many causes, including…
Incorrect timing
Dirty or worn injectors
Over-fuelling
Faulty turbocharger (ie not enough air to match the fuel)
Incorrect valve clearance
Incorrect air/fuel ratio
Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components)
Dirty air cleaner
Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping)
Other engine tune factors
Poor quality fuel
Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces
Cool operating temperatures

Blue smoke is an indication of oil being burnt. The oil can enter the combustion chamber for several reasons.
Worn valve guides or seals
Wear in power assemblies (ie cylinders, piston rings, ring grooves)
Cylinder glaze
Piston ring sticking
Incorrect grade of oil (eg oil too thin, and migrating past the rings)
Fuel dilution in the oil (oil thinned out with diesel)

On a side note, i was also getting white smoke when i had glow plug issues.

Tanx a lot hey,do you think that could be the reason for the Bakkie not starting at all? New alternator fitted and new battery tried

If the engine is not getting fuel, it won't start. So fuel Injection issues, fuel filter issues , fuel pump issues will definitely prevent from starting.

Did you verify that there is power going to the glowplugs, could be glowplug fuse or relay also. Also I have seen cheap glowplugs fail after one start.

You must have big legs! I hope you where proper boots when kick-starting that beast else you gonna break something :D
