From someone who changed jobs twice in the last 13mths please, I offer you one piece of advice: DO NOT WORK THROUGH AGENCIES!!!!

Unless your prospective employer is outsourcing their HR to an individual, the industry will spin a junk story and ruin your reputation. They are all quick to say that got dozens of jobs on their books but when it actually comes to getting you an interview, it all turns to be nothing.

I've experienced the opposite. Recruiter got me 5 interviews last time I was in the job market.

Some companies only use agencies but overall I find 95% of agents to be lying sharks who mislead both job seekers and prospective employers as to the state of the current market. I've only worked with 3 agents I would be prepared to recommend.

Dude... How many jobs have you had? Not to cause offence but by your calculations you've worked with about 60 of them. And to have such frequent contact with them is a bit strange unless you change jobs every 6 or so months (2 job changes in 13 months?).

But, I will agree with you that most recruiters are a bunch of misinformed wolves out for their own gain. "Let's place him anywhere so that we can get our money" kinda thing. For anyone interested, I'd recommend e-merge.

This scarcity of devs has been there for the last 10 years or more. Still you find that a lot dev houses pay crappy or average salaries. I reckon we should get what is ours and charge 30% more for our work. We ARE A DAMN NATIONAL TREASURE!

I fully agree with you....there should be a association for IT skilled people and they check on the recruiters and companies for ripping employees off with poor pay.

@above: there is also a scarcity of boiler makers and skilled artisans - that doesn't mean they get paid a lot of money. All that means is that one is guaranteed a job, not a well paying one.

You're only worth what income you can generate for your employer.
