There was a slight hiccup as Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle tried to cast his vote at the Beacon Hurst Primary School in Ward 28, East London, on Wednesday morning.
"The IEC official insisted that I come in without scanning my ID. When I got into the voting area, I was turned back to scan my ID. It was just an error and it was quickly handled," he said.
While making his way to the voting booth, a contingent of journalists followed him, snapping pictures.
An IEC official threatened to kick the media out of the voting station.
"My vote is my secret, but I didn't mind that the media was there. However I felt that everyone needs to follow the rules," Masualle told journalists.
He believed the ANC could improve ward 28, which was a DA stronghold.
"We continue to strive to alter the balance here, but certainly it's going to take time. This ward is not run well, from my experience," he said.
Masualle said he wished the current councillor would be more active in the community.
